Being able to 'read the room' is a pretty good skill to pick up, sometimes you get somebody who just flat out doesn't want to engage with you personally.
Maybe they're just trying to get a job done and their dog died that morning. Maybe they've got a stick in the butt. Who can say!

I'm with rental car lady and wish there were more rental car ladies. I'd rather not talk for talking's sake either. I'll take silence over weather conversation and "what do you do for work." Unless at least one party is interested or invested, I'd rather just be left to my own thoughts.
I wish I could ask strangers in situations like that what songs give them goosebumps and if they've ever walked out of a movie theater seeing the world differently than they did when they walked in and I wish they would ask me those things instead of prognosticating about the chance of rain. When my dad died I ached to know how all these people around me managed grief and loss. But that's not socially sanctioned small talk.
