I think it works. He's just doing research and following things that don't make sense. Shows he has patience and questions authority early on.

No I get that, but couldn't they have started off a little smaller, like I don't know, finding out where Alfred is hiding the cookies or something? Not immediately jumping into big bad detective mode and actually finding something out.
