The Official Super Mario Sunshine Thread

Why are Mario fans the only ones that don't care when they change a game's genre? Toejam and Earl fans freaking imploded when they made the sequel a platform game, but when they make a Mario 64 which is wholly irrelevant to the games before it, everyone acts like its part of the series. I've even heard people try to claim M64 is just a 3D interpretation of the old games.

I don't want to bitch, but I miss the days when MArio was a linear arcade-platformer. I don't like running around slow ass retarded enemies. I don't like collecting crap. I don't want exploration. I don't want to race the koopa. I want a REAL damn Mario game. Can I be the only one?

Because Miyamoto is Midas.

I'd be interested to see another standard Super Mario title as well. I can't figure the "magic" behind the franchise out.

The reason so few Mario fans complain is that each game is of such high quality there is no reason to complain about them being different in gameplay. Each game manages to be different but still be a Mario game.

Then why did they have a heart attack over Toejam and Earl 2 or every other game that changed gears?

And I wouldn't say Mario 64 is nearly the quality of the old games. Way too slow and open for me. Still quality, but not really a classic in the way the old games were. I still play all-stars on a regular basis, but I never feel the need to touch Mario 64.

People often expect a change when a series goes 3d. I don't see many people freaking out over ToeJam & Earl 3 being different.

Because TJ&E is a direct throwback to the first game, and totally abandons everything that was good about the second game, because everyone blew a gasket that it was a platformer. The fact that it's a regression back to the original formula is the very reason they willingly accept it.

I think it depends on the series.

Very few Shinobi fans complained when the Genesis sequel steered the series in a new direction. Many Castlevania fans complained about Castlevania 2 being different but very few people bash Symphony of the Night.

I guess I haven't heard many people talk about ToeJam & Earl 2. I can't say I liked either game but the first game was better.

Sunshine is a classic.

I wish I could beleive a testimonial, but this is Miyamoto we're talking about. I had to listen to everyone talk about how Mario 64 was the true evolution of the MArio series and the best game ever and all that other crap, and upon playing the game I just found an decent game, that I got sick of after a couple weeks.

I hate to say it, but Treasure's the same way. They'll kiss ass even if its not that good. Look at GameGo's Stretch Panic coverage. Some people just have too devoted of a fanbase to be worth istening to anyone. I'll play it for myself, but if its really more M64 I'm going to be disappointed.

Nintendo has a much better track record than Treasure though. Treasure, even with their relatively small number of games is hit or miss. Nintendo misses once in a blue moon with games like Yoshi's Story.
