Disclaimer I'm not getting involved with this discussion, and personally I side with if it's a good game it's a good game regardless of sequel or new ip. I could be miss-understanding Hero here, but I think he's saying that frequency of the samey is the problem or non-issue. I think he's saying samey every year is worse than samey every 5 years. Though I could be wrong.
What I'm getting at is that all samey is good as long as it's good (and even if it's good bad) - it's the overall perception by media, critics, and gamers that bugs. That they say a specific samey is good while another isn't. Either all samey is good (which I can get behind) or it isn't, but this mix and match 'standard' is nonsense.
Mech says that story games can be excused for sameness, but story doesn't matter all that much to me if I don't like the gameplay. So something like gears doesn't get a pass (not because it's samey but because I don't like it) but ME does (it's samey but fun) and it doesn't have to do with tolerating sameness for the sake of story. It's just... A good game is good, samey or not.
Basically this - I believe this, and I don't like that game's criticism/perception contradicts itself constantly and waves away criticism of inconsistent criticism.
so who said it wasn't
A game like Pikmin 3 can be simultaneously hailed for being 'the best Pikmin' while being criticized for being 'just another pikmin' while ME2 and 3 are called amazing, even though one is just an iteration on the other.
I don't mind that ME2 and 3 are similar - because they're good. I don't mind that about Pikmin either. Yet the standard of criticism seems to be, bemoan iteration in one case and not the other, even though both instances are fundamentally good.
P3 metacritic 87
ME3 metacritic 89 (PC)/93 (PS360)/85 (WU)
Of course this is implying that both games have the same quality. Despite being one of the six WiiU owners, I have not played Pikmin 3, but I felt ME3 was great, except for the whole 'do a mission, talk to everyone in the galaxy, find three people that have something to say, do the next mission'
I feel like the "Just another Pikmin" criticism was more aimed at it not being the thing to save Wii U (,__, nothing will save the wii u)
But Pikmin 3 is amazing, not just as a wonderful game, but in its willingness to be the game that it is without trying to be anything other than what it is. If it was a pig it'd be Wilbur.
You still haven't gotten it, Yoshi? I feel like that the fact that i'm liking it so much means you won't like it as much.
Game scores *shrug*
they only matter when you really love a game or really hate a game
