I agree with this. Everyone not acting or directing was at the top of their game.

"A report in an American Cinematographer article states that the Heinlein novel was optioned well into the pre-production period of the film, which had a working title of Bug Hunt at Outpost Nine; most of the writing team reportedly were unaware of the novel at the time. According to the DVD commentary, Paul Verhoeven never finished reading the novel, claiming he read through the first few chapters and became both "bored and depressed."[2]

The whole idea that the movie is a clever satire of the book is just a con.
Yeah but 'who cares' it's still a fun movie (which in the end still adapts material from the novel)
"This happened."
"Give me proof, I dont believe you."
"Here is your proof."
"Whatever, I like turtles."
There are many ways to respond to an argument (read: debate) that you just lost. Why does the internet mostly choose to respond in unrelated, moronic fashions? (It's a trick, I know why.)
Bite me, that's why.
No, no, you really don't need to continue to proove my point for me. You've already done so, wonderfully.
There's a certain passive nature to posting on such a board, call it 'a grumbling acknowledgement as a shorthand for taking the time to talk it out further'.
Sorry to offend your sense of decorum, cupcake.
Incidentally, despite the article's inference, he's still wrong.
Also, slightly related, apparently Aliens was partly an adaptation of Starship Troopers. I find that fascinating. It is really impressive he wanted to make the book into a movie, but probably realized that the power loader could not be done right in the corridors of the spaceship, and instead pulled back and did something else. That is incredibly admirable in film. Many would have went balls deep and put garbage out. Instead he played to his strengths.
There's also that Starship Troopers anime, but I don't quite know much on that other than it looks like Votoms a bit.

Fast forwarding through it, it seems VERY close to the movie's interpretation of the first scenes in places. Hmm!
I think there's grounds here that the film takes more from the novel than that Wikipedia entry seems to cop to. Football scene, check. Prom dance scene, check. Basic training paintball scene, check. Knife throwing scene, check.
The Ape Suits are the big divergence.
