It kinda sorta implies that the brainwashing thing at the end is a ok and super duper.
Frakes wanted the alien to be played by a dude. That would have been way intense for the early 90's,
It's been a while since I've seen the episode but I seem to recall Riker being heartbroken and Picard being sympathetic but ultimately like, "Yo, dat Prime Directive, son."
