But would they have sold out if they were common?
Just chilling with my cool Wii that already does all this shit on a CRT.
'But muh pee cees' flounced out with Yoshi, I thought?
No one cares.
define common.
From the moment they announced the thing, I had friends and family that had no previous desire to talk to me about games asking if I were getting it.
Granted, that's anecdotal, but I've heard much the same from plenty of others.
Conservitely, they could have released a million (I'd argue 3-5 times that) and have sold out. It was the perfect storm for a Christmas gift - cheap, attractive to multiple age brackets, and unique enough.
They released 200,000.
From a shareholder's standpoint, someone should have fallen on their sword. They left millions of dollars on the table.
They had no reason from their pov to think it would sell well. A lot of nes fans are older buyers that never pay full retail. We can't see it but the sales on the nes games in the vc could be low too. And the bundle systems for atari and sega only sell so well do.
I wouldn't mind having one for the office, but I have no use for it at home.
That's insane. I've mentioned it a million times but I knew that thing was going to be huge. Lots of people who grew up on NES have families, it's affordable, looks great, and it's a perfect "I don't know what to get this person but I know he likes games" gift.
I'm with SSJN, this could easily have been one of the hot holiday gifts if they put out enough.
And if each of us knew that the thing would be huge, Nintendo should have damn well known as well.
I would however, like to present a conspiracy theory. Perhaps the purpose was not so much sales as much as hype. The Wii U floundered, but this Nintendo product is hot, and you can't find it anywhere. Now, while it's still scarce, here comes the Switch, and now preorders sold out almost instantly. We can't miss out on the Switch like we did the NES Classic!
