Clue- Science fiction is one hell of a lot better in book format than movie/tv. Might I recommend a little John Varley or David Weber? Charles Sheffield has been known to do a good book here and there as well.
I'd like to answer the science fiction movie question but I'd have to exchange the word "good" for "entertaining", which isn't the same thing. Then I'd have to blow off the whole "science fiction vs action movie in space" thing. So it's a tricky question...
