i paid 35 bucks for the second release, used mint, well worth it...
top 3 shmups of all time category. the Saturn port roars, no slowdown, bigger pixels.
and there is no chance in hell MM is as good as DDP.

Metal_Slug: I actually thought this thread would be about Dodonpachi Dai-ou-jou. For shame.
I've probably played Dodonpachi for less than an hour- I know I need to play this longer to get the hang of it, but it's so darn frustrating when I can't hold a repectable chain. I like the game on paper, but it's yet to click with me. I think it's a case of me not being good enough to really play it yet however.
Example: I bought Mars Matrix the day it came out, played it, liked it. Dropped it for quite awhile, played Gunbird 2 and a ton of other shooters a lot. Last week a friends younger cousin was over playing my games (side note: Last week a friends younger cousin was over playing my games-I think I've inadvertently created another shooter fiend, mostly on account of that's about all I have. He even flips the TV! I didn't even push him into it, I swear;))
Anyway, after gathering more experience I came back to MM last week, and I appreciate it so much more. I've been having a lot more fun wreaking havoc in it lately. And by playing "that dot game" so goddamn much (slowing down the dot when appropriate) I think I have a better idea how to approach DDP...

Heh... sorry for the disappointment. I don't know very much about Dai-Ou-Jou, quite frankly....Quote:

I know what you mean about just having to put down a game because you feel you aren't good enough... But in my case, I have to turn the game off because I'm dying way too often. Not because I'm getting poor chains, etc. Damn, I can really get frustrated from taking stupid hits that can easily be avoided.
Anyway... You gotta start those kiddies while they're young! Get them into good habit early...
Right now I'm looking at some Commodore monitor auctions... and if all goes well and I win one, I'll pick up DDP and really get into some true vert shooting.
I flipped my TV earlier today for some Gunbird 2 earlier, but man... A Commodore would be soo much nicer. And I got my ass kicked, not to mention. It's been a while...
Hey cigs, long time no see.
M_S, It's good to see that you are looking into some vert shmupping. Don't be discouraged by dying too much in Gunbird 2, I find that game to be much harder than DDP. For some reason the patterns in GB2 just don't click whith me. All the Gunbird, Strikers etc. games just kick my ass.
DDP gives out that shooter high way more than any other shmup. Every now & then you will amaze yourself with at the shit you dodge. Simply the most intense gaming experience on a console, PERIOD. The only other console game that comes close is Battle Garegga IMO. Mars Matrix & Giga Wing 1 & 2 are cool but I think I just play better with a vert screen set-up or something.
I have the saturn version of DDP, but I really want the PSX version too. Has anyone seen it in any online shops? I'd really appreciate a heads up on that one.

One note about the eternal SS versus PSone DDP debate: to my knowledge, the SS rev allows 2-player play, the PSone rev does not.
I share cigs' feelings on DDP. It's good to know I'm not the only one. I like DDP for what it is, it just hasn't grooved with me like GigaWing 2, Mars Matrix, and Radiant Silvergun have.
I like to use the red ship on DDP and it's just hard as hell to keep a respectable chain going. Granted, I haven't played the game much, but I get frustrated with how rigid the chaining system really is. It puzzles me why people who don't like Radiant Silvergun's chaining system cite DDP as an example of how chaining should be done, since in my experience DDP is just as rigid as RSG. By comparison, I think Mars Matrix allows for a lot more improvisation and creativity, two things I look for in a shooter.
I burnt out pretty quickly on DDP once I started focusing on chaining as well. I would dispute the point that it doesn't require creativity, but it certainly does stress a single solution in a lot of instances.
At either rate, if you're not enjoying the methodical chaining, fuck it and just play to survive. Or take advantage of the other scoring aspects, like the bees, the bombs or the occasional hidden score trick. You'll still be able to pull in a respectable score and with considerably less stress.
And the game still isn't generic.
Well, my DDP should arrive in 2-3 days.
Anxiously awaiting getting my ass kicked.
I read this in a review, but the PSX version supposedly just doesn't allow to choose two different ships in two player mode. Ns biggie.Quote:

I've really wanted to pick this game up lately, but I'm going for the PSX version. It must be great if Saturn nuts admit it's a good or better port.
For those that still don't know, one of the most important facts about DDP is that the bullet contact point is the very center of your ship. Using this is crucial and can help you squeeze through the smallest cracks in the most insane bullet clouds. Heads up, Slug. This is one pointer you'll need.
Nice... I love some extra breathing space...Quote:
