Sounds like a rental to me. I can't believe they'll charge 50 dollars for it. Lord knows Rez was really a 10 dollar game in disguise.
EDIT- Looks like this game is getting mixed reviews all around. Gamespot gave it a 5 out of 10 citing it for its lack of longevity and easiness.
This is awful, another SEGA clunker. I still have high hopes for this game but after reading these reviews, I'm definitely going to wait till it hits the bargain bin.
I need to come out and say this, since most reviews aren't.
Gungrave is not about beating the game. It's not about how hard it is. It's not about how long it is.
It's about how good you are at it (before you lambast me with comments of "duh," read the rest first). This game is basically the 3rd-person equivilant of an overhead/side-scrolling shooter. Yes, you can continue wherever, yes, you can refill your life whenever, you can do the same thing by using more credits in shooters. This game is all about continuing the combos, making Grave look good while doing it, never actually getting hurt, and doing it fast so that your score increases. It's about the high score, not winning. The only way to get a high score is to play on Hard and do all the above; the maximum amount of points you can get changes by difficulty level due to the added toughness of enemies, Easy -about 5 million, Normal -about 9 million, Hard -over 14 million.
Anyone can blow through it, but if you're there solely to beat it, you'll be let down. I actually think it's a bit too long, considering my attempts to beat it without continuing or losing life. This is where the save between levels hurts it (despite this being such a feature among todays games, it shouldn't have been in here) as you can keep your score and come back later to work on the higher stages, but this should also help with some people who don't normally try score challenges.
Heck, IGN also made an oddity in their review:I wonder if he realized that if you simply slow down your button pressing Grave will instantly drop out of it, or that you can dive out of that bullet dance? You actually have full control over that "move" simply due to button timing.Quote:
Grave does that same silly dance over and over every time you stop moving for more than two seconds, and half the time that gets you killed because you want to keep moving.
I fully realize that Gungrave is an arcade-style game that can be completed in an hour, and the replay value lies in the scoring system. I'm fine with all that, and I enjoy games of that nature. I just think the gameplay in Gungrave is lame to begin with.
