Thread: Favorite Special Effects

  1. Favorite Special Effects

Post up your favorite special effects, CGI or make up effects.

    Mine are:
    Raptors-Jurrasic Park trilogy
    Predator-Predator 1 and 2
    Aliens-Alien Saga
    Draco- Dragonheart
    Dragons-Reign of fire
Beast Wars and Beast Machines, eveything you see!!

There are some more but I can't remember...

  2. i really like the matrix "bullet-time freeze-scene-rotate-image" special effect.

i usually hate slow-motion (especially when john woo uses it), but i like it when the image is really clear during a slow-motion scene. for example, the rockclimbing scene in mission: impossible 2 where tom cruise jumps from what rock to another. there was no blur, and it was really subtle (ironically, it was in a john woo movie). formula 51 also had a very great slow-motion scene when the jaguar slams into the garbage boat. again, very clean and subtle.

i also really like the "twins special effects," where they have one actor playing two characters, and they're both on the screen at the same time. when it's done right, it's amazing.

however, i'm more a fan of shots and cinematography than special effects.

Double Impact baby. I need to have a Van Damme night a just rent a bunch of his movies.

  4. I like special effects when they are used for a purpose, and not to say "look we spent a lot of money".

    That said I like:

Miniatures (like in the Star Wars movies) over CGI.

CGI as used in Fight Club (to make the camera move ultra fast and then zoom in so close, like on the cellular level)

Makeup that is so good that you don't notice it.

  5. one of my absolute favs is the infamous "scanners" sceen where that guys head just blows apart...oh man is that some good effects.
Oh, and Giger is a god
    What isn't remembered, Never happened

  6. I've always liked good transformation effects like "American Werewolf in London" or "Cat people". Those were cool, now all they seem to do is use computer morphong techniques that always make me feel cheated out of a good werewolf scene.

The chest bursting scene in the original "Alien" movie is one of my favorite f/x ever.

Same, though I liked many of The Matrix's effects.

CG, like how it was used in A Beautiful Mind. Otherwise I'm more a fan of sets/costumes/makeup/puppetry... Legend can't be fucked with in this department.

All CGI looks like shit to me. I don't like it.

  9. You'd be lying through your teeth if you told me that you knew where all the CG had been used in A Beautiful Mind without having been told/shown first.
