Thread: Long overdue Akira Kurosawa thread.

  1. Long overdue Akira Kurosawa thread.

Finally got to see Dreams last week. I've wanted to see this for so long but have never been able to find it, but it mysteriously surfaced at the library. Wow. I am glad to see that someone has been able to transcend the typical notion that tales of another man's dreams will bore listeners to death. How? By turning those listeneers into watchers, of course. This film has some of the most beautiful imagery I have ever seen put onto film. Simply breathtaking, especially one particular scene of the Japanese hillsides in "The Tunnel" segment. The windmill village was beautiful as well. Kurosawa's personal traits, good and bad, shine through in all their glory. His unrational fear of nuclear holocaust, his feelings about war, his love for art, and, above all, his love for nature. Typical Kurosawa showcases of the human spirit are represented as well, most notably in "The Tunnel", which features dead World War II soldiers that simply can't accept their fate. Anyway, I'll just leave with the note that a Kurosawa documentary is coming out soon, and assuming that Kurosawa is done making films, it should probably be quite good and serve as a sort of effigy for his career.

  2. kurosawa is the man. but isn't he dead? last i checked, he died in 1998. that would mean he is done making films.
I've only seen throne of blood, ran and 7 samurai, but i enjoyed them all, espicially ran. what a beautiful movie! i just won the criterion DVD of rashomon on ebay. i can't wait to get it.

  3. Heh, I was being facetious with that remark . Anyway, those are all really good films, but you should really check out Ikiru. It's the ultimate post-war film, and my favorite from Kurosawa.

    BTW, check your PMs .

  4. I'll check out ikiru soon.

    and check your PM's

  5. I just found out about Akira Kurosawa's book Something Like An Autobiography. I've gotten it from the library and I'll probably make a fairly long post about it. Oh, and this thread should probably be moved to the movies forum, now that we have one

  6. Fianlly got around to renting the Seven Samurai DVD a month or so ago. Brillian film. Man, was I pissed when Kikuchiyo got killed...anyway, I'm looking forward to watching some more of Kurosawa's films. Any suggestions? I keep hearing about Ran...

You know the man had pull as a filmmaker when Hollywood started ripping off his movies, like with The Magnificent Seven.

  7. Ok...what is w/ the large number of cinema posts going in sound off lately?

Spread the love to all the boards people.

  8. It pains me greatly every time I talk with someone about the Magnificent Seven and they have no idea that it is a retelling of a much greater movie.

Did anyone else notice the similarities between A Bug's Life and Seven Samurai?

  9. Yeah, that and A Fistful of Dollars being based on Yojimbo, and to a lesser extent, The Hidden Fortress's influence on Star Wars. Kurosawa was ahead of his time, but he does not go unrecognized in Hollywood. I still need to check out Rashoman (which I own) and Ran (which I will once I can find a decent non-Winstar DVD of it).

  10. The only Kurosawa I own is Yojimbo, but I have seen 7 Samurai, Senjiro, Hidden Fortress, & Ran.

I am also a big fan of Toshiro Mifune. He is the man, plain & simple. I'm getting Samurai I, & II for christmas, and I can't wait. I just read Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa and I want to see how the films stack up to the book, which was great.
