Thread: Which do you think will sell better this holiday season; Gamecube or Xbox?

  1. You can definitely see the Xbox/EB deal at work.

I've been to 3 seperate stores in Dallas, and every one of them has 7-8 foot wide Xbox displays at the entrance to the store, and a 3 foot wide Gamecube section in the back of the store, next to PSOne hits like Hooters Road Trip.

Buy Yakuza and Oblivion. Help yourself, help TNL.

  3. Xbox - Europe and America

    Gamecube - Japan

Not that it really matters. Western kids don't want Nintendo games, they want PS2s and Vice City. Mario Sunshine didn't even dent Xbox sales in America and due to constant price drops Xbox has caught up with Gamecube in Europe, so why do people think that a Metroid game can change anything? This christmas Nintendo don't have RE Zero, Zelda or Metroid Prime in Europe so they are slightly fucked in this territory too.

"Are you all forgetting about the millions of college students who live in dorms that are fully equipped with broadband?"

I'm in a student house near the university and even I have broadband. You are 100% right because most universities are based in cities so can get broadband easily even if not in a dorm.

I think this holiday season Nintendo will catch up and then overtake the xbox in NA. They have the franchise names lined up, and MS doesn't. As for Japan, well, Biohazard 0 and Zelda will both sell twice as many copies are there are xbox owners.
Do you really believe that? XB has 'over 80' rated E games (I think that's how many GC has total right now), parental controls, and more value, plus the Microsoft name, which means more to 30 year old parents than Nintendo, and can double as a 'DVD player for the kids'.

PS: The ONLY franchise a parent will recognize on GC is Mario. SF, AC and Metroid, and definitely RE, will not attract parents in any way.

I think the Xbox needed a lot stronger lineup, coming into this holiday season and titles like Panzer Dragoon Orta could have helped alot.

Metroid Prime is'nt the only seller this holiday season, for the GC. Phatasy Star Online is going to be a decent hit. I just went online with the DC version and I noticed how dead it is now, that the GC version is out. I have a feeling that anyone that bought the DC version, is going to want a Gamecube to play that version also. Also with the Super Mario Sunshine Bundle, the GC is looking very good for those on a budget.

Joe Gamer doesn't spend lots of time on PC and the fact that it is made for a controler helps the Xbox side quite a bit. I see it as an Xbox game that is also on PC, not a PC game that is also on Xbox like Morrowind. PSO is a factor, though a small one IMO. The GC bundle is 20 less than the Xbox bundle and it comes with 2 games so I think the value will be seen on that front. Xbox is the better value this holiday and it will be seen as such. PS2 will remain strong, though clearly (to me) the Playstation brand hardware will take a hit in sales, accessories and software will impress on that front however (though Sony's line should be hit the heviest by Used games).

HOWEVER: Nintendo has always been a strong Holiday preformer. Xbox can sustain good sales throughout the year with a strong Holiday to boot, but Gamecube will certianly corner a lot of the christmas market.

In any case, I think Software sales are going to be substaintially weaker on Gamecubes side while Xbox trailing far behind PS2 in software (we'll see just how much more PS2 sells in this season vs. Xbox... I think the margin cannot be predicted easily). I think Xbox and GC are going to be very close in terms of hardware (neglegibly close) but after the holodays and on the Xbox will remain stronger. In terms of Software, Xbox software will likely outperform GC but be smoked by PS2. Misc. sales will probably be in PS2's favor followed by Gamecube (speaking of accessories and such).

All told, I think the Xbox will have better hardware numbers than GC at least (but not by much). Sofware will be on Sony's side followed by MS and Ninendo bringing up the rear. Misc. saled will be led by Sony with Nintendo not far behind and MS in last back there though Live should do fairly well. GBA will likely lead in all fronts besides accessories - that's a plus for 'tendo.

I hope beyond hope that kb doesn't turn this into a console bikering thread. I'm looking at this anaylitically, not emotionally.

  6. who cares about this.. the real challange.. will GBA beat ps2 this season.. i see more people buying gba than ps2/gc/xboxs... i espically with pokemon R/S in Feburary.. and the new Hamtaro, Yugioh, and hary potter game thats out now..

  7. The GC will outsell the XBox on these sole premises:

    1) it has the kiddie edge for the holiday season
    2) it has 'party games'
    3) regardless of the upcoming lineup, it already has games that pander to 1 and 2
    4) the holiday lineup is good, and features more 'friendly' titles than XBox. Sure, Unreal and SC may be nice, but Metroid and Mario are more recognizable.
    5) It's cheap, even in bundle form.

That's why it'll win out, regardless if it deserves to or not.

Read the posts again... I was giving Ethugg his medal, which I have yet to be thanked for.

As for broadband, I have Earthlink cable through Roadrunner. And no, I refuse to use DSL, since SBC is evil and any other telco that has to work on their equipment suffers massive delays due to said evilness...

Interesting to hear that from someone who's not in the industry.

  10. There is officially NO good DSL providers in Houston.

I thought you were saying you weren't a wishhick because you didn't have high speed internet :/ I have RR too but I work for Phonoscope which has 'teh best' intarnet in town. Well... it's fast at least - Static IP's too.
