Thread: Gunbird 2!

  1. Thanks for the link! I don't think a Japanese style stick would fit in an X-Arcade, but I am planning on replacing the buttons on my Tekken Tag Tournament Hori stick.

Perhaps a Korean stick would be great... if I could find one cheap...

Haha. No. At the very beginning of 5, but never have on 4 yet. That's a goal of mine.

It would take a "perfect" or near perfect game, getting 500,000 on the first 3 since the fourth only gives about 100,000 even. I've gotten close to the 500,000 mark, but then I'll miss the gemhead on 4 or something stupid. The closest I've gotten on 4, I think, is about 590,000, or 10,000 away.

I think I'm going to further revise my 1-6 and 1-7 strategies since I relied too much on dying.
My 6 plan needs some revising. Is it just me or is 6 harder than 7? I always use 3-4 bombs on the level 6 boss (2-3 on first, 1 on second form) and almost always figure in a death on level 6 to "reset" the difficulty. If you want a big score, you can't be powering down a lot, because those 4,000s really add up.

  3. Well, I do think 1-6 is harder, since there can be a lot of variations.

It seems to have a lot of difficulty levels which you have to keep in mind pretty much all the time. The spinny dudes' spread shots can either be easy, or require some bit of consciousness, or force you to throw out a bomb (of course I make sure to Power Down as I beat the 1-5 so that's not a problem). Also those green dude's screen-filling dots can either be avoided entirely (which is the case if I die) or require you to navigate your way through them, something I end up bombing on.

Though I do think the boss is great fun... today I was able to beat it with only 1 bomb (0 on the first form), and dodging gets at least some reaction from the crowd.

All I really have to worry about in 1-7 is that mid-boss.

Speaking of which, today I got up to the dog (on my first game) and died... I can't dodge those bullets! Not even that first double ball thing! So I guess I'm in a rut. I did beat my old score without beating the game, but that's shameful and sorta stupid. If making videos was easier I'd show how I play on 1-5 through 1-7, but my playing screen when capturing is pitifully small, and I can't exactly flip my TV to record on tape.

I find 1-6 more difficult because I need to pay more
attention to the bullets' trajectories. Triple Lei already
mentioned a few examples. In 1-7, many of the patterns are
aimed and have conspicuous openings--I can move without
thinking too much about the bullets.

Also, I've yet to settle on how I should distribute my
bombs for 1-6. The stage trip is easier now that I've
figured out a way to use more of my Bat Missiles. But I'm
considering using two bombs on the boss. The first form is
easy to defeat if I use a bomb on the first net pattern.
As for the second form, I'm thinking about using a bomb on
the opening attack, just when the boss is about to fire
its lasers--my method of running through the middle of the
screen is unreliable. I've yet to test this bomb
    distribution thoroughly, though.

    . . .

Aww, crap. The manager of the arcade I go to might dump

Anyone know where else I can play Gunbird 2 in an arcade
    near the Bay Area?

  5. Grr! Argh! Zort! New record at the arcade, still at a shameful second. It wasn't great scoring either, since I got my extend after beating the 1-5 mini-boss. I beat the game and lasted for more than 5 seconds in 2-1 this time (It was probably a good 20 or 30 seconds ), but no one was watching...

    1,199,800 - Triple Lei / Marion 2-1

You know, I think I am going to try to play through the 2nd round. How much harder is a stage in 2-3 compared to 2-1? It can't get any harder, can it?

    And, uh, sorry about Bearcade...

I think it won't get any harder. For each random stage, I
noticed no change in difficulty among the 2-1, 2-2, and
2-3 versions--there's really only one version. So there's
little need to rethink your basic approach if a random
stage shows up as 2-3 instead of 2-1.

  7. 1,284,900 - Rob / Morrigan 2-1

I'm getting slaughtered on 2-1. I wish I could just practice it separately.

  8. Rob, you can. If you have the American GB 2, hold start as you powerup the game. You'll get a debug menu with a bunch of options; one is playing at loop difficulty.

  9. Thanks. That'll make it a bit more interesting. I'll be better prepared next time.

  10. No, no, don't tell him!

I also got a new record but I wasn't going to keep posting marginal updates every time, but now I suppose I have to.

    1,212,400 - Triple Lei / Marion 2-1

I lasted quite a while in Britain, almost getting to the boss... all on borrowed time. Can you believe I died on 1-1 during that play?

Anyway I updated my site which now has all random stage variations, and I'll get to work on 1-5 soon. I've decided to allow for one death in 1-5 and 1-6 to make the difficulty more manageable. Remember, my guides are for "the rest of us," who want a high score without having to dodge the harder waves!

(and does anyone really know what all the options are in the Debug Mode?)
