For the 2-random stages, I recommend setting the StageRankOriginally posted by Rob
What do you guys think a good starting stage rank is for loop practice? I "crank it up" to 5, which is pretty low, but better than 0.
at 9, which best simulates a stage in 2-3. Again, I found
no differences among the 2-1, 2-2, and 2-3 versions of a
particular stage, so there's no need to practice playing
each version. But to be sure that you're practicing on the
highest difficulty possible, play the 2-3 version.
Also, for these stages, I recommend setting the LifeTime
at 8 and ShotRank at 3 to start each stage at the highest
rank possible. Any lower and bullets would be slower and
less numerous--not a good way to practice.

Thankfully no one was watching then. I find myself restarting if I die before the 1-5 boss, which is suprisingly often.
