Reading the instruction booklet on the way is STILL a ritual for me. Something to holdme over till I finaly make it to my system an pop in the game. I can't see how you can buy a game and never play it, unless it is a rare ass game and worth a to and you got a deal on it, but besides that games were meant to be played, not sit on shelves and collect dust.
I keep doubles in shrinkwrap. You know, games you might want to play 30 years from now, or games that I play so much I'm sure they'll wear out eventually - especially disc-based media.
But if I buy something new, the plastic's off as soon as I leave the store. Too many times I've gotten a game home to find there's no manual or the disc came loose in shipping and got scratched. Plus I want to test it right away and make sure it works and is complete.
I know, I'm cursed or something - it's happened to me four times. Every time with a recent PS2 game, now that I think of it: Contra SS, Burnout 2, Maximo, and Fatal Frame. The store employees always give me shifty looks....
The only one I have still shrinked is The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages. I was waiting until I finished Seasons, but that hasn't happened yet. I wish I'd left Stretch Panic wrapped, since I've never played it. Hell, I wish I'd never bought it.
Nah, I crave the feeling of tearing the shrinkwrap off a game, opening case to reveal the bounty within, and waiting in anticipation as the game boots up and I lay eyes on it for the first time.
So the only game I have that's still shrinkwrapped is Kingdom Hearts which I only got a week or so ago at the TRU deal. After I finish Suikoden III I'll rip that baby open.
I always open 'em up and give 'em a whirl when I buy them, even if they're then condemmed to the pile of shame. I just can't stand wrapped games on my rack.
I've never had a game remain shrinkwrapped in my house for longer then five minutes, unless it was wrapped up as a present. As soon as I lay my hands on a game that's mine, it's open either once I begin the walk home or sit down in the car.
