Thread: Stop the violence!!! ( Hitman 2 controversy)

  1. How in the hell is it stereotyping? This is all I want to know. No one ever said Sikhs were Arabic or Muslims. If you assumed they were, that is your own problem. Not once in the game does it refer to the characters as Arabic, nor does it imply they are Muslim. Arabics/Muslims are not "terrorists" so apart from your "funny hat" comment, I see no way they would be connected.

It just seems a little silly to me to whine about a damn videogame. Hitman 2 is not meant to be "real". As stated above, the main character is genetecially engineered!

    Ethugg,
Since you seem to know so much, how are the characters a "hateful stereotype"? You want me to "wake up", well enlighten me. Inform me of how they are a stereotype. Is it because they are portrayed as terrorists? So, you are saying that there never has been and never will be any sikh terrorists? Forgetting all of that, as I've stated a multitude of times, just because these enemies happen to be sikhs, doesn't mean the developers are implying that all sikhs are terrorists. I don't see how the "race" of a polygonal model even comes into play. If you take issue with this, what about GTA? In that game, the main character is always white. I guess whites are the only ones who carjack and run people over? What about all the Italians always being portrayed as mafia?

Also, why can't I tell them how to feel? They need to lighten up. There are more pressing issues than some fictional characters in a videogame. If they are allowed to whine about it, than I'm allowed to say how silly they look.

One more question, how would you propose the terrorists in the game were handled? Make them blue so as to not offend anyone? Oh, but then the Smurfs might get mad. Completely take them out and change the focus of the game to "loving thy neighbor"? If the developers made the enemies a different race, would it be any different and if so, how? It's not like the only enemies in Hitman 2 are Sikh, there are Russians, Italians and others. The point of the game is to stop the bad guys, not to stop the Sikhs.

I don't know what else to say. I don't expect you to change your opinion, I just don't understand it. I don't look at videogame characters and see a race. I see a fictional jumbling of polygonals or sprites.

  2. Out of curiousity, at what point did Hitman 2 ever even hint at relating Sikhs to Arabics? I noticed this was brought up a few times, but didn't notice any connection (at least not one I'm aware of). I think it deals more with people assuming every American assumes that everyone with a turban is a terrorist then it does with Sikh and Dalit terrorists or Hitman 2 making any sort of connection between them all.

Unless I missed something and I'm simply behind in the conversation here.

  3. Skeletor scored some bud and some Hitman2.

  5. Sikh's think it's racist, and since they are Sikh, and you are not, no further information or proof is neccessary.

  6. MrKasualUltra2000,
    Ok, I won't have a "hissy fit"...

    EThugg,
Even if I were, I would not find something as trivial as a videogame racist. If they are calling for a ban that will affect me, then information and proof are needed. You can't just say "that offends me, get rid of it". If you could, the world would be very bland. It offends them, fine. Don't support it. Making a big fuss over it does nothing but get the game free publicity. As we all know, negative publicity is just as good, and sometimes better than positive. You have to wonder how many more sales this has generated for Eidos, certainly it has helped them more than hurt them. We'll just have to agree to disagree.

So. Whatcha think of that Italian organization who sued the producers of the Sopranos because they believed the show painted a negative portrayal of Italian-Americans? Should the show have been cancelled because a fringe activist group believed it was offensive? Nevermind that this group was far from the official voice of the Italian-American community, and that many Italain-Americans enjoy the show. Do you, if you were Ruler of All (which would be a fine job for you, I think), pull the show and please the minority, or ignore their bitching and let those who enjoy it have their fun? I need to know, man. I need to know.

    Hahah

  9. Religeous groups are always offended. So what?

PS: Sikh is a religion, since when are they a race?

  10. Race is a socially constructed concept that was based on weak minded individules' need to label, classify and segregate themselves from other people based on skin color, religion, cultural background or some other B.S. A race does not exist nor can it be offended. Aside from that when does one small group speak for the majority of a group (even one as superficial as a race) on what is offensive. I'm white but I don't believe that if a group of similarly pigmented friends and I decided something is offensive to my race (ala' BET or Black Starz, or Cedric the Ente-racist)that I speak for all white people, only racist think that way.
