Thread: Alien Resurrection

  1. i don't remember any of what striderkyo mentioned, but then again, i haven't seen it in a while. but from what i do remember, i thought it was a good sci-fi action movie. sure, it wasn't aliens, but it was still a great addition to the series.

Come on, man. You, the king of dark cinema, thought the original Alien was BORING??!!?? It's one of the best sci-fi/horror films that will ever be made. I love Alien 3 (NO WAY is it more intense than the original), and thought Fincher did the best he could under the circumstances Fox restricted him with, but what Ridley Scott did with Alien will probably never be matched in this genre for the rest of human history (yes, I'm serious). The cast acting was great. The story was great. The slowly building claustrophobia was genius. Alien has everything a fan of horror cinema could ever want. Nothing personal, Despair, I'm just shocked you said that. Watch it again, and pay attention to how the shots are structured and how mood is created - it's a brilliant piece of filmmaking. No, it's not action-packed (I disliked Aliens personally), but it's full of constant dread and fear.

Just wondering - did you see Aliens before Alien?

Not only should Joss Whedon be shot, so should Sigourney Weaver for lowering herself and Ripley to the disaster that was Alien Resurrection.

And Paul Anderson's going to trash Aliens vs. Predator (a horrible premise if there ever was one) just like he's forever tarnished the name of Resident Evil.

  3. Yes, I did watched Aliens before the Alien, and I agree that it might have something to do with my perception of Alien. I liked fist half of the film, the landing and exploration of the wrecked ship, alien attack and birth, but then, when the chase started it became somewhat boring. Maybe because Scott relied more on the tension and trying to scare you with something you dont see, but imagine it, and honestly I am no a fan of that approach. I WANT to see the MONSTERS, I WANT to see what happens to characters, and I hate when it done away from the camera, or you just assume what happened. I also liked the final of the film, when Ripley discovers Alien hiding in the escape pod. But again, it was nicely done display of sfx, and me being fx nut, affected my enjoyment of the said scene. But overall, I still have a mixed feelings about it. Don't misunderstand me, I consider it to be a GREAT movie, and very important one at that, but not my personal favorite.

I'm sad to hear your criticism of Paul Anderson. I still like his work, and do consider him one of my favorite directors. And I am excited about upcoming AVP, that he is working on. Plus, Lance Henriksen will be in it, and that alone make it WORTHY

  4. That's cool, man. That type of filmmaking isn't your thing. I prefer the method of things happening off-screen. I think it can be much more effective than straight-up seeing it, because you're forced to imagine what happened...and for me, that's often more terrifying than anything you could see through a camera.

Paul Anderson again - ha ha. I really liked Event Horizon, but I think Resident Evil works better as a piece of suspense rather than nonstop action. AvP might be good, but I think it's gotta have a great script and I have serious doubts. But Lance helps.

    Satoshi Kon: 1963-2010

  5. I saw this in the movies and I don't know what to day about it. I still think Aliens is the best one but they should at least continue it in a better fashion than Resurrection. Sweet mother of cheese is this a horrible horrible movie that should be burned up in a can of oil, blood and urine.

All in all I give it a 9/10

  6. quick off-topic jab: resident evil sucked.

You're not. It's my second favorite of the series, after Aliens.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet makes all the difference. It's Aliens-meets-Amelie!

I don't have a problem with Alien 3, since it at least tries to stay consistent with the mood of the series. It was like the director looked at Aliens, decided that ti was a classic that couldn't be topped, and decided not to go for a machine gun fest. That's fine. The only things I didn't like about it were that a) they make a big deal about this religion the prisoners are supposed to have, then never say anything about it, and b) Lance Henriksen was in the movie for no apparent reason. I mean, that appearance at the end, did that seem logical to anyone?

I also like Resurection. Yeah, the story might be considered little cheesy, but it had great fx,
And lots of really bad ones - like the end. Too many computer generated Alien scenes.

lots of cool gore, action scenes(Strider, I think that reflecting bullets scenes was great),
Right, but it was also kind of silly. The first two Alien movies worked because the technology, the people, the sets, everything was completely believable. Resurrection wasn't at all.

    humor,
But why make it into a joke fest? There's no tension at all in this movie, which is the whole point of the series. Why not just make it a musical?

and excellent visual style, that you would expect from the director of City of Lost Children and Amelie.
I think the style isn't as unique as Lost Children's, and nowhere near as distinctive as Aliens', which is sad considering it came out more than ten years later. It just feels like they're running around in a generic space station that could have been in any sci fi movie.

Fun film that was more closer to Aliens, but people still bitch about it
Closer to Aliens?? Aside from the fact that there were guns in it (which weren't half as cool as the space marines' gear), and more than one alien, it feels like it's from a completely different series. It has nothing in common with Aliens, from the silly way the Aliens and fights are presented to the lighting to the dialogue to the characters to the whole mood of the film. Ugh. Sorry, hated it.

  9. Well, Thats your choice

I dont think it had that much humor to spoil the mood, and it still had few suspensful scenes. I dont remember Aliens to be very suspensful either, and it relied on action as much as Resurrection did.

I have no problems with cgi animated aliens, they looked good enough. You say the gear is not as cool, but I thought that pirate weapons were cooler than regular guns of Marines, that only had 3 varieties of guns.

You also mentioned communications between aliens this time around, and I think its not as unbelivable as it may sound. Since those aliens were cloned, their dna got mixed with human, which affected their genetic structure, thus making them a new breed.
