Thread: Sega Master System

    Sega Master System

Here's a little story: Back in 5th grade a friend of mine got a Sega Master System for Christmas. Then another friend got one. The word going around at the time was the SMS was superior in many ways to the NES and it had some of the coolest games and amazing graphics. So after long and hard thought my parents decided to buy me a SMS with Astro Warrior/Hang on cart and a joystick. This was sort of a reward for me as I was managing to be better with my anger. The first night I got it I must have played for hours.

My very first game was the often scoffed at Aztec Adventure, but I loved it and it was the first game I ever beat.

We would have SMS parties where we would all bring our games and have marathon sessions.

The SMS was by far my favorite 8-Bit system so much fun and so many memories.

Govellius stood out as an amazing game with it's movie still scenes and epic story.

The story sadly ends on a bad note as I sold everything to some guy for like $200. Now I wish I didn't do it.

So who grew up on this System and liked it better than the NES.

Anyone remember the free hint line 1-800 USA-SEGA ? I called that so much as the most popular code was the infamous Choplifter stage select code.

  2. Yeah, I used to call the USA-SEGA all the time. They didn't mind you wasting their time. I would ask them what games to get and such. I got my SMS fairly early... 87 I think. I walked into the store and the salesman told me most of the kids were getting NES, and he showed me the NES demo kiosk. I played for a minute, and then went looked back at the SMS kiosk running space Harrier and I looked at the guy and said "You must think I'm retarded. Why would anyone buy an NES?"

    Never regretted my choice.

  3. I still love the Master System, completely.

  4. I will hate that system for all eternity, because I got back out to the surface in Zillion and died to the countdown timer about two INCHES from completion.

    Hate hate hate.

Quantity to quality, I'd have to say I had more fun with the 8-bit Sega than just about anything else. Thanks for making this thread, Korian. Golvellius was, aside from the pack-ins, my first SMS game. I still hum the intro music occassionally ("this is a tale of days when demons tormented the earth..." or something like that)

You obviously live in a different neighborhood than I do.. when I got the SMS, my NES-playing friends made fun of me... then I got Miracle Warriors, and they stopped

  6. Was Miracle Warriors the one with a succubus last boss showing her nipples? I think she was green too... I beat it if that's the case

  7. Yep, it was. Pretty cool game for the day, but way way old school. I think the game predates Dragon Quest, even.

I got my SMS before most of my freinds got NES's but if they ever talked smack all I had to do was show them Space Harrier, and that was the end of it.

  8. SMS is one of my favoureite systems ever. There are just so many incredible games for that system. Classics like Alex Kidd, Zillion, Phantasy Star, Wonder Boy.. wow... Some of these games had the biggest impact on what kind of games I liked.

I always wished I had more friends with SMS. I only knew 1-2 people and to be honest I didn't like them very much... One guy did let be borrow Shinobi though. That was nice. Everyone else who came over and played my SMS was quite jealous though... the games looked and played so nice compared to what they were used to. I still maintain that SMS games almost look like they are a generation ahead of NES games.

Anyway, I also called that 1-800-USA-SEGA line all the time. Sometime I'd even call just for the sake of it or boredom.. hehe. Good times.

  9. For me it was the other way around. Most of my good friends had a SMS instead of a NES. And although both of the systems had great games, I enjoyed all the SMS classics more than the NES. I mean Zelda, Ninja Gaiden 1&2, Guardian Legend, and the Castlevania series were good and all, but Zillion 1&2(so I liked the tri-formation, sue me ), Thunder Blade, Shinobi, R-Type, Rastan, Golvellius (I liked this more than Zelda, the music was superior to anything else done on a 8-bit system), Out Run, Choplifter, Wonder Boy series, and above any other game, Phantasy Star. I am pretty sure that I am missing a couple of great games, but man did I have fun with that system... Those were the days...

  10. They should have made the SMS slogan : "Hey kids, like being laughed at by your classmates? Well, have we got a game system for you!"
