How would I go about adding blank space to the beginning of an AVI file? I need about 7 seconds of black added to the start of a file.

Um, I dont think a trial version will allow you to save, or if it does, w/o a mark of some sort (not sure)
Anyway, w/ any video editing program you should just be able to input an image that is totally black and have it last 7 secs.

Have you ever used Vurtualdub? Can it be done with that?

Ulead Video Studio 4 and beyond will let you do that.
