Thread: Microsoft locking out modded Xboxes on Xbox Live

  1. You're possibly correct. He labels himself as "bitter". Maybe that make me unable to understand his supposedly "bitter" sense of sarcastic humour.

The thing is that people xbox live accounts aren't being banned- its an issue with the modded xbox itself. For the time being, a lot of people with mod chips are either exchanging their systems at places like target or walmart, selling their systems (which may never work with xboxlive), or jacking serial numbers from xboxes at stores. This is going to cause a lot of problems.
Okay, I read up on this and it seems you can't have a mod chip in there when going to xbox live even if you have it set to the original bios, but you can 'clean' your xbox prior to xbox live (removing the chip and a couple other things) and you'll be fine.

Still makes it an either / or situation. The really stupid thing is MS has now broken two promises. First, Xbox was going to be region free. Second, chips wouldn't affect xbox live. If they had just kept one of these, this problem wouldn't be a problem.

Will they release the PDO Xbox in the States?

(It was good to think so.)

Could be very likely. Look how many people invest in Gamesharks. And with all the people out to get Microsoft, think of how many could be using the mod chips to create virus' and worms to currupt XBox Live just so Microsoft can look bad.

Well, it wasn't good for Microsoft not to keep their word though, but I still think in the end it's for the best. I'm surprised so many people complained about XBox's PC nature before it was released though because from the way it sounds, that's pretty much what you want. A PC that works on your TV.

Consoles are closed platforms however. They aren't meant for people to hack and stuff. Do you think when Nintendo came out with the NES, they said "Boy, I can't wait for people to break down our system and learn how to make it do all kinds of things." No. They wanted people to buy their system to play the games they made available to that market. If that content's not worth it then you can always leave the system on the shelf.
Taking it one day at a time.

  5. I would normally fight against Microsoft on modchips, but from a Live perspective, I support their decision. It'd be too easy for someone to make a hack that would allow them to cheat online, or fubar the network. It's bad enough that someone, somewhere, has probably been capturing packets that the Xbox sends to XBL in the hopes of hacking/crashing the network. By eliminating modchipped Xboxes from XBL, Microsoft is actually protecting it's consumers for once. My opinion: block chips on Xbox Live. But don't block chipped consoles from playing offline games (like Sony did with it's titles on PS1). I won't get into the whole legal aspect of mod chips. I'd just prefer to see the online network stay in one piece for as long as possible.

  6. Are import (Japanese) Xboxes dirt cheap yet?

  7. The thing is the xbox hackers will find a way around this sooner or later, most likely sooner, so in the end it won't make any difference.

I'm sick of the lies. Pick a policy and stay with it, not this changing their minds at the last second nonsense.

  8. That's somewhat of a pessimistic view to be taking. Here's the thing, as I see it:

Not only is Microsoft in a position where they can tell if data has been tampered with (or is otherwise not behaving normally), but they seem to be taking a very proactive approach to doing just that. And, failing that, gamers themselves are in a very good position to report cheating thanks to the univeral Gamertags.

So is cheating inevitable? Maybe, but not without an awfully good fight. There's no denying that Xbox Live is in the best position of all the consoles to keep online gaming clean, and that's good enough for me.

  9. If you can't get on Xbox Live, just use xbconnect. it's free and it works on modded xboxes.

Seriously, what's the deal with that? Is there some particular reason why you can't make a boot disc for PS2 and Xbox, or have the pirates just not figured it out yet? (which seems unlikely)
