Prime is the first game to give me that sense of wonderment of exploring a unknown world since OoT, while remaining distinctly Metroid. I'm really enjoying it, control qualms aside.

  2. First and foremost: If you have not reached the Space Pirates, don't even try to say this game doesn't have hectic, insane battles. In fact, you really can't judge the overall battle system until you get to them, as they will put you to the test.
In regards to the scanner, how much info comes up? I keep getting the image that I'm going to walk into a room, scan stuff and end up reading a couple pages worth of monotonous text before going to the next room.
Once you've scanned something its highlight becomes darker, so you know you've already read it. There's usually one-two new pieces of info in major rooms, hallways have nothing, and certain science areas have tons. You don't have to read a damn thing if you don't want to (aside from the ones needed to trigger events, and if you stick to only the red-highlight ones you'll have no problem), but they provide a ton of info on the Metroids, the Space Pirates, the planets, Chozo background... everything.

In regards to the control: My only problem has been that I have not been able to look at the scenery in the most convienent way. I mean solely looking at the walls and marvelling at the design, I have not had a single problem with them in any other way. Honestly, screw the C-Stick as freelook, it isn't needed in the slightest and wouldn't work anyway because of firing (like what Tonic was saying).

The death scene is so goddamn sweet, it scared the hell out of me once I started wearing headphones. Oh, and thermal imaging fucking rocks.

Hmm... debating becoming "sick" for work tomorrow.

  3. What an absolutely phenomenal game. This is easily the game of the year, if not one of the best of all time. Highest praise to everyone involved.

  4. Yeah, I'll chirp in and say that despite preferring standard fps controls, Metroid is really growing on me. Exploration is fun again, instead of the chore it is in most games. I didnt' realize you could turn of the "hints", though. Think I'll do that; even though they don't really affect how I play at all, they're just a little too "un-metroid".

    **MINOR SPOILER**
Also, I like how they worked in your suit being damaged, so that you didn't start with all your abilities at the beginning of the game (a logic gap I was wondering about), but am a little disappointed that they're just randomly spread out around the place, with no sense of reason, besides pacing. I guess games like Halo and Half-Life (and not because they're fps) sort-of spoiled me on that whole "believable atmosphere" thing. Which sucks, because I love metroid, and it has twice as much atmosphere as either of those, just some odd remnants from its more primitive days holding over, I suppose. As a side question...does anyone play with an original pad? I use a wavebird, and I'm wondering if I'm missing anything without the rumble?

    Metroid = atmosphere without reason...

In other words, I never expect any metroid game to make a lick of sense.

If it did, I doubt it would be even remotely as charming.

Either way, atmosphere without reason or story, is an amazing feat to pull off.

  7. GrRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!

    I HATE YOU FUCKERS!!!!

Generally when everybody fawns over a game like this it means it's a must buy (won't mention that shclok called Morrowind *ahem*) Now I gotta go get this damn thing tomorrow and it's not in the budget.

    FUCK YOU PEOPLE!!!!

    GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!

  8. Played it yesterday. It sucks. Back to Shadowrun for Genesis.

Boo on you, that company, that made this poo!

  9. Love it, the heat waves that escape from the tip of your gun after a heated battle, the distortion of the background as you fire a charged shot, the rain on the visor.. and I didn't see it but I'd be willing to bet if you shot your gun enough for it to heat up and watch the rain fall it probably sizzles. They've thought of all the little details, not to mention the important ones as well.

  10. Well, Fusion had me captivated for most of yesterday, but I finally got around to playing the first level of Prime. Wow, this game really looks good. I feel kinda' bad gunning down Space Pirates who already have "severe internal injuries" according to my scanner in the first level.... Poor defenseless fellows. One problem I'm having is that I never play FPS's, and I'm not used to the perspective as a result. I got motion sickness more than once!
