Thread: Metroid Prime

  1. FPS jumping has been ass because FPS developers have been ass in implementing it. I've had very few problems jumping in Prime - no more than I would have had in a 2D or third-person game. Jumping is a bigger part of Prime than in typical FPSs because - suprise! - Prime isn't a typical FPS.

You can't instantly turn around in real life, either. If the slight lag is throwing you off that much, you need to use other options to compensate or give up. Prime wasn't meant to be a walk in the park.

Lock-on moves faster then Samus did in every way in SM. Besides, Samus was almost never attacked from both directions at once in SM, so what does that have to do with anything?

Question: Did you have the same complaint about ZOoT?
Anyway - I just got the Wave Beam, and I'm really hooked. Still not sold that beam switching is the best use of the C Stick, but I'm happy I don't have to switch through the menu.
Just wait. It'll become a god-send in a few hours.

Will: You were never part of the mighty JSRF thread, were you?

  3. I hate to drag this out, but Will is right in that he wants to read impressions but doesn't want to be spoiled. I don't agree with what you said about Mech, but I had the same problem in the RE0 thread (looking at you, Despair).

  4. k....im stuck in the ice level at the start with the floating gas powered platforms.....

  5. Dragonmaster, there is a grate on the bottom level that looks like you can almost get your ball through. Blast it with a missle, then go in and scan the thing inside.

  9. I think the jumping was handled great. The camera seems to tilt upwards at precisely the right moment, plus I've had no trouble determining which jumps I can make and which I can't.

The fact that Samus takes no damage from falling also helps, along with the fact there are no bottomless pits, fire chasms, or do-or-die leaps that I've seen.

As far as mobility - well damn, she's encased in a heavy suit of armor, augmented as it may be. It's handled with surprising grace, but Samus' limitations are spot-on realistic, I think.

I did go too harsh on him I suppose, I'm sorry Mech it was a heat of the moment type thing. Anyways, Prime is really gorgeous, every effect is great and it has amazing level design. While the fact that there's no looking while running and that there's no quick turn annoys me a bit in some heated battles the combat is very well done.

Best Gamecube game and possibly console game IMO.
