Just saw the film on video. I definitely enjoyed it. Possibly the least disappointing film of this year's summer lineup. Matt McConaughy's character was fucking dope (except for his last scene in the movie; so fucking stupid). He looked like a character from an Image comic book or something. Really impressed with the set and character designs. Mixing fantasy themes with post-apocalypic settings and modern technology was already an excellent concept, and I'm glad everything ended up looking as great as it did.
The action scenes were decent, the best being the first Archangel scene. I wish that team had more screen time than they did. Also, the cg was incredible. Amazing how far we've gone since T2 in photoreal cg quality. Never did it cross my mind that the dragons were nothing more than cartoons. The Archangel jump scene and certain fire blasts were the only digital SFX that didn't look 100% authentic.
This movie also made me more interested in Christian Bale. I'll definitely check out Equilibrium when it's released (I'm starting to wonder if Bale would have made for a better Neo in The Matrix than Keanu . . . ah well, spilled milk).
As long as you resist thoughts of how utterly ridiculous a notion it is for dragons to destroy the entire world ( *SPOILER* and all the world's international defense had to do in their 20 years of battle was take out the male dragon), it's an overall great rental. My main gripe has to be the damn PG13 rating. If RoF was more brutal and violent, with scenes of dragons tearing apart and BBQing unsuspecting humans in graphic fashion (as the movie suggested when I saw the trailers) it could have ended up being the best 'monster hunt' film since Aliens imo.
I just got around to watching this and have to say I'm pleasantly surprised. Taito, if you're buying into the dragons have been sleeping since the dinosaur thing to begin with, it isn't hard to overlook your spoiler. =)
Despite being a bit far fetched, I think this is well worth the loot.
I think I enjoyed this movie but I walked away from the theater disappointed. My friends hated it. All the negativity stems from the same facts too.
Basically, we felt we were misled by the advertising. In all the ads, it's made out to see like a massive action, war-of-the-species type movie. (SPOILER ? Just in case : The poster alone features a half dozen non-existant helicopters battling dragons in the (non-portrayed) act of destroying London whereas those events, in actuality, occur decades prior to the movie.)
I do areee the Archangels was an awesome scene, despite being absolute nonsense. (SPOILER ? Just in case : How is it that a specialized dragon hunting force has tactics that essentially are only capable of fighting ONE dragon at a time ? Face it, if there are two, Archangels are toast. The triangular radar setup by bikers is also ridiculous -- couldn't they launch them out of rocket launchers instead ?)
Both me and my friends feel this movie would benefit being about an hour longer and showing the actual battles taking place over the years... a prequel of sorts. Something more like ID4 with dragons instead of dragons.
Will have to wait till next month, with all the game purchases and all
