"So does Steel Battalion really need to be played with that gigantic controller? No, since most of the nonessential functions could have been mapped to secondary menus and crammed onto the standard Xbox pad."
The above ruins any sort of credibility the reviewer may have had. The controller IS the game and the many functions essentiel to the immersion of it all. It could not be done on the pad, utter nonsense.

I actually thought about this today at work, and it could work. Almost.Originally posted by Sidez

Map left and right to the shoulders, view to the left stick, aiming to the right stick, fire to the right stick button, gas to the left stick button, and menus to the buttons (with activation through the d-pad). Problem is, I see no way for the sidestep (CRUCIAL) to fit in, and it would feel nothing like it does now. This also eliminates startup completely and makes impossible to get to any of the need-right-now buttons (chaff, extinguisher, magazine change, etc.), and it would be twice as hard to figure out if you need certain things (I know I need the extinguisher because the button lights up).
So it's possible, but it would suck, and wouldn't play nearly as good.
Eh. Reviews are the opinions of one person. Same thing happened at Fighters.net when Shadowjin reviewed virtua fighter 4, he gave it a A- or something because he kept comparing it to Tekken.
I probably would have given it a somewhat similar score, due to the fact that a) it would take quite a bit of time to master the control (it doesn't seem like the type of game you can just dive right into...), and 2) those rumours of it erasing your save files if you fail to eject were true, and finally 3) I'm not a fan of the mech games.
Reviews can't please everybody.
(edit: Please make my day like those morons at xbox.com forums and whine about how splinter cell got a 8.7)
I went to read that expecting to see him ripping on the game, instead I saw a fair review. He's almost completely positive about the game. The only significant negatives he points out are the price (which is an issue Andy, unless you're just filthy rich), and the relatively simplistic and brief gameplay (which it is - 10 missions and a remix is not huge, and the game gets pretty easy after you've been playing it for a few days). He continuously points out how impressive the immersion is, and yes, while he mentions you could put it on a pad, he also says that would defeat the point of the experience :P
Anyway, its a review, who cares?

This is the line that got me right here.
"with only a couple of exceptions, you'll merely have to wipe out most of your enemies to advance to the next mission."
*Smacks forehead*
War's just that easy! Hey, somebody tell our guys in the mid east all they have to do is merely wipe out most of their enemies. We could have our guys back here by Thanksgiving.
What else would you be doing in a war game?! I would expect (and hope) that a war game would be mostly wiping out enemies. But this reviewer makes it sound like you just push the "wipe out enemies" button or something. I'm sure there is actuall gameplay involved in wiping those enemies out.
I played this racing game once. It was OK, but most of the game was mearly getting to the finish line faster than the other guys.
What about that platformer that had you jumping and shit? That was some deep shit. The price shouldn't come into play unless it is EXTREMELY skewed. For $250, I expect something resembling the gaming version of Christ.

Hey, I can't afford SB either (well, maybe next year), but detracting from a game because of price and not the game itself sucks.Originally posted by Victrix

Andy, it's their job, as the "big time" site to tell "Joe Gamer" if the game is worth the price that the game costs. If it doesn't meet the expectations that the price kind of implies that it is worth, it is their duty to tell the reader that.

yeah because it's not possible he just didn't like it.although I admit I only started noticing them after I read his Gunvalkyrie review (6.2/10, the fool)
