Thread: Can I b**** about Metroid Prime?

  1. Melf: Omega isn't that tough after you overcome the intimidation factor. During the first phase, rely on fully charged plasma shots - it only takes one per section of armor. Let them go as Omega goes into his ground wave - concentrate on making the most of your shots, rather than making the most shots. If you do it fast enough, you won't have to worry about morphing, but don't hesitate to bail if he gets to close - his punches hurt a lot worse than his Quake or the Phazon.

When you destroy his armor, he'll spaz out and disappear. At this time, two to four random beam Pirates will attack. This is critical - dispatch as many of them as you can in 10-12 seconds, and then ignore them. Use Super Missiles on the especially annoying Power Troopers. Then, switch to your X-Ray vision and Power Beam and search the Phazon pools for Omega, who will be restoring his armor. Lock on and nail him with a Super Missile, and he'll lose a huge chunk of health and teleport away. Look around for him again, avoiding the Pirates you've failed to dispatch, and repeat. If you manage to hit him twice before he's fully restored, he'll call for more backup, but at this point you should concentrate on landing another hit on Omega.

You'll see it when his armor is restored - that's your cue to switch back to phase one and repeat the process. Blast his blocking hand to elicit a quick Quake Wave - it'll KO the remaining Pirates who will otherwise annoy you. You should be able to kill him on the second cycle - it only takes five or so Super Missiles when he's vulnerable.

  2. Man a lot of you people complain a lot about simple things.

Whats so bad about lock on? When you Play a flight sim do you go "Stupid Lock on! I want to strictly aim!"? Ever think that maybe Samus was sick of Aiming and found out that Locking on works better and created a Suit that allowed her to lock-on? If you have a problem with locking on then you must have problems with things like Heat Seaking Missles and other such things in other games.

How hard is to take 1 sec. (thats how long it takes) to press the D-Pad? I've Never had a problem tapping a button.

Jumping, walk to the edge, press jump and hold foreward till you pass over the other edge, and you land. Man thats tough. Oh and sometimes press jump again to do a "tricky" double jump that makes the jump longer.

And opa-opa, what the hell DO you like in Metroid games? And again, HOW FAR ARE YOU IN PRIME?!
    Barf! Barf! Barf!

  3. I think something needs to be established here. METROID PRIME IS NOT A FIRST PERSON SHOOTER. Would you classify Super Metroid in the same genre as Contra Hard Corps? They're both platformers where you shoot at enemies right? No, Contra's a side scrolling platform shooter and Super Metroid is a side scrolling platform adventure/exploration game. What makes a first person shooter a first person shooter is that it's a first person game based on SHOOTING. Metroid Prime's gameplay is not based on shooting things, it's based on exploration, puzzle solving, platforming, ect. That's why there's lock on, that's why there's no dual analog control, because this is not an FPS. It's a Metroid game that happens to be first person perspective. The enemies and their patterns are designed with this in mind. Once you accept that this is not an FPS, but rather simply a Metroid game in a first person perspective maybe you can start coming up with legitimate knocks on this game. Knock it for reasons that you don't like Metroid games, you sound dumb when you knock it for being a bad first person shooter.

  4. Clash: Good point about the visor switching. I sometimes fumble around when I'm not paying attention, but I generally get it right in pressure situations. It takes one button press to switch your visor - how the hell is that too complicated?

Spo: Prime is definitely an FPS. It's an exploration/adventure-heavy FPS, and it's unlike other FPSs, but it's still an FPS. I'm not trying to validate anyone's complaints, but calling it something other than FPS makes you sound disingenuous.

  5. You're right, it's not a first person SHOOTER, it's just a first person game.

I guess my complaint is that in general, first-person action-exploration games suck. The first person view is well suited for shooters, or flight sims, but not for platform-exploration type games IMHO.

Just because they were successful in "transforming" a Metroid game into a first person game, doesn't make it a good game IMHO. I still think that making Metroid into a first person game was a horrible decision.

Maybe a different way to say it is, just because you were able to do a really good job of smashing a square peg into a round hole, doesn't mean that it was a good idea to try it in the first place.

  6. Yeah its a First Person Game with Shooting. But Putting it in the same Genre with Quake does not seem correct to me since they are so different.
    Barf! Barf! Barf!

  7. Who cares what you categorize the damn game as. It's a video game designed for fun.

  8. I am just trying to prevent future people from not buying the game because they think its just going to play like Quake or something. And yes its designed for fun, and since I like fun, I like Metroid Prime.
    Barf! Barf! Barf!

  9. Prime is a First-Person Explorer...the addition of a full lock-on feature completely deemphasizes shooting. I'd be happier with First-Person Dodger, First-Person Adventurer, anything, but the game (from what I've played of it) shares very very little with any other First Person Shooter.

  10. Why are so many people obsessed with genres? Metroid Prime is Metroid Prime, and whether you call it an FPS or not, it's still 100% Metroid Prime. Genres matter when you're trying to describe a game to someone who hasn't played it or when you're deciding whether to play it yourself, but once it's in your console, who gives a shit what anyone calls it?

Opa: I could understand it if you said you don't like exploration games (to which effect you made an entire thread, causing me to question why the hell you even bothered to rent Prime), but saying that the first person is bad for exploration games is just silly. The first person is ideal for exploring - for putting the player in the player-character's head.

The problems with first-person games are generally that you can't see your feet (thus making jumping difficult) and that you can't see your back (making fighting difficult). I don't see how anyone has problems with the jumping elements in Prime - Retro simply compensated by giving nice big platforms to land on. Sure, you'll miss or misjudge jumps sometimes, but it happens in 2D plats and all the time in 3D plats. The latter is a problem which plagues all FPSs (moreso than Prime). The answer is a radar indicator.

Putting the camera on Samus instead of her environment also puts the focus on her and not the environment. Remember how annoying it was when a bat would knock you around in OoT, and you could never quite see where it was coming from? Or when you couldn't get the camera angle precisely where you wanted it? All that's gone in Prime. Even when I Morph and roll, I feel claustrophobic because I can't see everything I could before.

I'm going to have to play the "you haven't played enough" card on that comment.
