Thread: Is Turbografx/PCE music underrated?

  1. Is Turbografx/PCE music underrated?

I don't mean the CD music from Turbo CD games, but just the plain old Turbografx-16 sound chip generated music.....

Even though I know the SNES and Genesis has much higher quality sound hardware...for some reason, I really like the music in a lot of the Turbo games...it kinda reminds me of NES game music (which I also like), but slightly better quality...

For example I think the music from Super Star Soldier, Soldier Blade, Aldynes, and Blazing Lasers are all awesome....

  2. I think the whole damn package is under rated.

I actually think some of the music in Keith Courage in Alpha Zones is kinda cool.

  4. To be under rated, shouldn't it first have to be rated?
Buy Yakuza and Oblivion. Help yourself, help TNL.

  5. I do think it gets overlooked because so many of the CD games have outstanding soundtracks. I really liked the music in Aero Blasters, Blazing Lazers, Bonk's Revenge, and Final Lap Twin.

  6. Yeah, the PC Engine has one bitchin' lo-fi sound library, imo. It was a limited chip, but in the hands of programmers who knew what they were doing, it had a ton of character. Seriously, you could base a shogazer band around the thing.

  7. I love the music from Galaga 88's vertical scrolling levels. The PC Engine soundchip gets a thumbs up from me.

I have always loved the Turbo's sound chip. It can create "mysterious" sounding music. Alien Crush, Bonk's Adventure, Legendary Axe and many other games all have this charm.

  9. When I say it sounds like NES music, some TG fans get pissed off and defensive, but it does, especially in games like Air Zonk and Legendary Axe (I swear one track in Legendary Axe sounds like it was modeled after one from Adventures of Link). But I love (good) NES music.

    Underrated? No.

  10. Legendary Axe 2, Magical Chase, Super Star Soldier, the Crush games, yep I'm definitely a fan of the Turbo's sound chip. *-neo
