Thread: How Would You Run Nintendo?

  1. I would keep "A" titles separated by at least six months apiece, but save the "B" titles (new franchises mainly) as games to go between them.
    matthewgood fan
    lupin III fan

  2. I would sell it to Sony.

  3. Be Friendlier to the Press so they get more coverage.
    Try new franchises.
    More Games!!!
    Keep Capcom games Exclusive.
All this fighting. Over toys and games?

  4. Into the ground, more than likely.

I would use that lump of cash to purchase Capcom, Namco, and Sega. I would then have them focus on the off-line market.

  6. Things I would do:

-Get suikoden 3 on cube. Sony are kicking nintendo's arse for rpgs.

-Rpgs again: a good mammoth rpg with (4 controllers) multiplayer support would help keep people interested in cube. Try and get square to make a game like secret of mana. Give them all the money they need because it will be worth it. Disney did it with kingdom hearts. Perhaps nintendo could fit in a couple of mario rpg and paper mario characters in with square ones?

-create a serious fighting game with capcom. (not a party fighter)
the system would have an innovative use of the environment in 3d for battles.

-strengthen support for europe. Nintendo's pal treatment is horrendous for certain things. For example in australia we won't get metroid prime till next year. This was going to be key for christmas. Microsoft and sony are absolutely trouncing the crap out of cube here. I feel sorry for nintendo of australia for what little help they are getting. If nintendo want to do well globally they are going to have to put equal suppport for all regions and stop restricting releases. I make no apologies for any advantages I get by buying games imported as I am sick of waiting. Speed everything up. This ain't the 80s. Stores are now dropping cube from shelves due to poor sales and this may make it harder for people to get a hold of one in future, as well as limit exposure of the machine. Sadly importing may even be the only sane option for gamers.

-Get treasure to bring over some old classic games in compilation form to GC to draw the hardcore crowd. I would love to see a remake of sin and punishment on cube. I never got hold of the import on n64.
I'm sick of (and not going to bother to) trying to get hold of rare games that deserve to be played by more than the few people in japan that love thier games. If they wish to broaden thier fanbase cater to them. It's cheap. Just hand them the money and you boost the profile to your system to include hardcore gamers.

The rest I'm happy with. As long as they can get lots of arcade support (star fox, f-zero, Soul Calibur, ports of capcom fighters) they are doing ok imo. It's just that they need to beef up games made for home. The key will lie in securing certain big name games.
MS has thier Halo, sony thier GTA series. Nintendo? Metroid.

But is it enough? Does nintendo really care as much about adult gamers and the hardcore to create a series which is well supported at regular times. A good example is that we only got 1 zelda game for snes, 2 for n64, and soon another 2 for gc. Contrast that with however many tony hawk sequels there are going to be, how many final fantasy games there are, how many tomb raiders have appeared, and however many crash games people were willing to fork money out for. It's the age of regular sequels. Ever since cds came into gaming and third parties could start creating things with low risks and low cost, (ps1) I've seen no reason why thier can't be regular releases of games to cater to fans instead of 4 years droughts. Look how long the wait for super mario sunshine took and look at the scores. You can't tell me that SMS would have actually been 6 years in development? lol (no offence I love SMS but that could have been achieved in 2 years.) Nintendo should use the medium to thier advantage and make games that fill out the full disc. People love thier 'big epics' and wait in anticipation to be able to jump into them. The system (it's capable of some awesome graphics and fx) and the medium (disc) shouldn't go to waste.

As much as I hate to admit it, it (the ability to play good new games on a regular basis) all adds up to people, and this has a big impact to the success of a console as it shows you are prepared to flood the market to cater to all people. Not just kids or fanboys. In the old days of expensive carts, people could wait 3 months for each game and play the old games to death because each title was full of goodness such that they were near-infinately replayable. (and nobody would complain as systems had obvious limits and developers could focus on quality design and not technical things. (technical hurdles - this is what happened with ps2 in it's first gen software. Some of that stuff really makes DC owners puke. No wonder konami took 4 years to make mgs2! )

These days those same people have jobs and can afford to spend more money but less time on each game and wait less between games, to be able beat completey blow through games at a faster rate. (perhaps skills have increased? what was once hard as a kid is piss easy. I may not need 50 hints to guide me around, or instructions of where to go because it is obvious and I naturally feel like experimenting to gain any advantage over others) Games that are bigger, release more often, and aimed towards the more adult age groups (a great strategy game like advance wars should have a cool GC equivalent. And don't tell us the western market is too dumb to appreciate strategy, we have heaps more indepth stuff for pcs! ) would really help to change nintendo's image and help them keep up in the 3-way war. There's no reason to limit yourself to just pokemon, mario and zelda and then neglect stuff like metroid for aaages. By then, people have played 10 other games on the other systems by companies that haven't starved thier fans of more.

I want to agree. It was silly to add the Star Fox name to what would have been a perfectly solid, marketable game in Dinosaur Panet. But then again, when Nintendo did create something more original, such as Luigi's Mansion or even Pikmin, the public collectively yawned. The hype machines have always been focusing on Metroid Prime, Mario Sunshine and Zelda. So, in that sense, why not go with what works?

I'm not sure what Nintendo can do differently... the thought of a future without Nintendo consoles (GameBoys don't count) would probably drive me out of gaming. I'm disappointed that Dragon Quest 8 won't be around the help out the system in Japan; I had pretty much convinced myself it would be the long-awaited Megaton announcement

  8. Same here. I was hoping nintendo would have secured some sort of enix thing. Especially after what happened when square left to go with sony to creat ff7 (and later) it's cg and fx happy sequels.

This megaton announcment sounds like something robotic. I keep thinking of megatron for some reason I dunno.

    Such a question!

I would licence the use of Nintendo properties to other companies for cellphone/handheld software creation, as well as outsource the development of this software at a premium. This would allow all internal hardware and software development to be focussed solely on a home console. With this, I'd lower or potentially eliminate the fees for console development and permit any third-party developer to make software for Nintendo products on any terms they deem fit. In essence, Nintendo would stop pretending to be a "family oriented" producer and go back to simply being the single largest provider of videogame products worldwide.

The next console I'd develop would have no regional codings or need for a modchip. You want to play silvers? We're not stopping you. Thank you for speding time with OUR Nintendo machine.

Oh, I'd also stop all the BS delays and pull that FundQ trick as many times as the courts let me

  10. If I ran Nintendo, I would put somemoney into making some new franchises, and exploring some new genres, and venturing into unknown territory instead of cash in sequels.
