Thread: The Fifth Element

  1. I love this movie too, and I have no idea why...but then again, I'm a Starship Troopers fan.

  2. Starship Troopers was excellent as well. I'm a fan of Starcraft so it was nice to see a movie with a similar setting.

And thats a bad thing. If you "got it" Starship Troopers was a hell of a film.

Seems like every couple months, I get the urge to watch it. It's strange, because I don't think the film is outstanding in any particular area (besides being directed by Luc Besson), but it's very satisfying in an odd manner.

Probably my favorite thing about it is the visual style. Besson is one of my favorite directors, and he's in full command throughout. He makes the (perfectly) lackluster acting of Bruce Willis a great fit, Milla is still one of the most gorgeous women I've ever seen (if not the world's greatest actress), Ian Holm does a great job, and Gary Oldman does his half-serious, half-insane thing. Chris Tucker...well, it took me a few viewings to be able to swallow Ruby Rhod, but now he's a vital part of the whole picture. And Tiny Lister as the President? Cool. Damn, even Tricky has a bit part (and he gets blown to smithereens...heh). And the taxi-cab sequences are always amazing.

I know this film gets ragged on a lot, mostly for the admittedly hokey story, but it's a definite favorite of mine (but hey, I liked Hudson Hawk ) - for every silly Ruby Rhod "Bz! BZZZZZ!" moment there's something magnificent like the vocal performance of the Diva intermixed with Leeloo kicking some serious Mangalor ass to offset it.

I'll keep coming back to this one. Quirky and fantastic, with many a memorable moment.

I enjoyed this movie back when, but don't watch it so often anymore. I didn't like Ruby at all though (though swallowing him is another matter ) and consequently hated the movie for awhile.

Oh, and I to, love Hudson Hawk. What're you sweatin' that for?

Hudson Hawk is by far one of the finest movies ever created...

...or not. But it is still fun to watch.

  7. Well, I liked Hudson Hawk. It wasnt taking itself seriously, and had plenty funny moments.

  8. Richard E. Grant and Sandra Bernhard MADE that movie.

    "Bunny! Ball ball!"

Sigh...if only every actor could pick scripts like Bruce Willis. Say what you want about his acting ability, but he's been in quite a few great popcorn-munching-type films. At least he's content to stay within the limits of his range.

When I tell most people that I dig Hudson Hawk, they tend to look at me as if I asked if they'd like to stick their heads into a bucket of week-old hyena offal.

    But that's not TNL!

  9. Big fan of Luc Besson. Fifth Element, The Professional, La Femme Nikita, hell, even Kiss of the Dragon are all more than view-worthy, IMO.

  10. Great movie. I love flicks that are outside of the norm, and that's what this movie is. Completely wacky and original. Chris Tucker's character disturbs me, though.

I read a movie review of it when it first came out that describes it perfectly: "The Gay French Star Wars".

Luc Besson movies rule. The Professional was another great movie of his. I heard he's interested in doing a sequel with Natalie Portman now that she's grown up. I'd like to see that, even though she hasn't impressed me in an acting role since she was in that movie as a kid.
