While all three games are godly my vote goes for Metal Slug.

Metal Slug is a happy medium, gameplay-wise between the three games. It has the over-the-top gameplay that Gunstar has, and the tight but not too tight gameplay of Contra.

Plus all the animation you could possibly want in a 2-D game, at least in slug 3.
