Thread: Baldur's Gate

  1. Baldur's Gate

Has anybody else played the pinnacle of CRPGs? I know PC games don't get alot of love over here, but I'm sure somebody had to have played it. Suffice to say that this is one of my favorite games. It's addictive as hell, like Diablo, but with alot of more substance. The sequel is great too. Most people prefer it over the original but the first one just had that "something" that I can't really describe.

I thought Neverwinter Nights would surpass everything this game did, seeing as how it was hyped for about a year straight with it's robust multiplayer options and whatnot, but I saw it play at my friend's house and the lack of a party (you can only have one other person with you) really turned the game off for me.

So, does anyone else here enjoy CRPGs and has played Baldur's Gate?
Well that's like, your opinion, man.

  2. i HATED the battle system, and ended up unable to really get into the game because of it. Real time battels with parties that big don't work for me, and the auto pause was unplayable. That and i sucked real bad, some boss guy kept kicking my ass and i gave up on the game a long time ago. It's a shame too because i used to love the old gold box D&D games.

I've been thinking about trying NWN...

  3. The game wasn't meant to be played in real time. It only works well if you pause the game then issue commands during combat. I'm assuming you like the combat in Morrowind though, judging by your sig at least. I can just never understand how someone can find that combat fun though. It's fuckin horrible! Same goes for Everquest and all that other crap.

As far as having trouble with the game, I did in the beginning when I didn't know what I was doing, seeing how there's so much to learn, but once I got a hang of it my characters were soon Godlike. I remember reading about the Demogorgon and how hard he is and stuff, and I was expecting a tough battle, but I completely owned his ass. There are some tough boss battles though.

Alas, I haven't played a CRPG in awhile and I'd really like to. I wanna play Icewind Dale II but my shitty comp just isn't good enough. Ah well.
Well that's like, your opinion, man.

No, NOONE loves, fuck noone LIKES the Morrowind battle system. It's original (sorta) in that you enhance all your swords with spells that you make and stuff like that; but beyond that, the battle system sucks dick. Besides, Rollie kicks major ass.

  5. Yep, yep. Cant play the game in realtime. You need to pause and issue commands. In that sense, it works really well, way more fun than FF and its ilk.

As for the game itself, I didnt care much for the first game, but the second one was brilliant. It was huge, sprawling, great game world, tons of freedom, phat story. Awesome title, TONS of value (everywhere from 50-200 hours depending on much into it you want to go to), and it doesnt get supertedious or become a test of willpower like some other shit RPGs (Dragon Warrior VII). Good title.

  6. I loved BG. It's the first game I purchased when I got my computer, and I had a blast with it for a long time. I actually think I enjoyed it more than I did BG 2, for the simple fact that I just like a lower level D&D game.

Me too. Some of the stuff just gets too crazy when they take it to that high of a level. I also didn't like that there were less characters to pick up in 2. Alot of the fun of the original is in meeting new people and seeing how they'd fit into your party. I did like the kits and extra character classes in the sequel though. They provided some really interesting options for your soon to be demigod. The Kensai and Monk totally kicked ass. And the combinations you could make were endless.

The game really isn't all that tedious, but theres a bit of it, enough at least to make me all of the suddenly stop playing in the 6th Chapter. It was sorta repetitive and I got tired of doing the same thing for such a long time, probably because I did every side quest I could possibly do up until that point, which is a large chunk of the game, as anyone who has played knows. I hear the ending of the expansion pack is one of the best in all of videogames, wrapping up the series perfectly. If I still had the save on my HD I would consider completing it, but seeing as how it's been deleted a long time ago, all of the 100 hours I put into it, I don't think I'll be playing it again anytime soon. I can't even fit the damn thing on my HD anyway.

I'm sorry, the pinnacle of CRPGs belongs to Fallout 2.

  9. It's ok. I grinded my way through it only so I could feel better about starting the second one (which I like a lot more, but I still haven't finished, or even really scratched, to give you an idea of my opinion on the series).

Far from my favorite pc rpg series though, Fallout and Torment both stomp it into the dust. At some point (possibly soon) I will give BG2 and IWD another run though, and try to grind my way through them as well.

  10. Toooooormeent.

    Must play more Toooooormeeeeent.

    *twitch*

I just started this again, and man am I loving it. In terms of Infinity (that is the engine right?) engine games, I think it's much better than BG1 was. The dialoge and story make the experience that much better.

No real problems with the combat either, aside from my guys getting in each others way all of the time
