Is this news? It's well-documented publically that the US backed and even prompted Saddam into the Iran-Iraq war in the 80s. Supplying weapons was only part of the deal. Saddam, as a capitalist military dictator was far more palitable than the Ayatollah and his fundamentalist government, especially considering he'd overthrown the US' ally, the Shah.
Bush, as head of the CIA, was central to many of these dealings. It was said that he felt personally betrayed by Saddam when he invaded Kuwait; the US had backed him under the tacit assumption that it was a move to maintain stability in the middle east.
