Hey Dolemite, how come you never join us on the TNL Movie boards? There is alot of Kung Fu and Horror talk there...
The title says it all. Are there ane fans of those old dubbed Kung Fu movies where guys can jump 50 feet through the air as easily as you or I boot up a Dreamcast game? I LOVE those movies- the more outlandish and over-the-top, the better. Some favorites:
Fearless Fighters- lots of talking for a kung fu movie, and the fighting is pretty bad, but the dubbing is awesome (they say some really wacky shit) and the characters are nuts. With guys running around called "The Almighty Imperial Lightning Whip", "The Solar Ray" and "The Loner, also known as One Man Army" (famous for his Deadly Twin Sword, hell, they even play theme music whenever he draws it), you know this is going to be a great movie.
Born Invincible- about a guy that studies an acient form of kung fu that leaves him with snow white hair and a high pitched voice, but also makes him unable to be hurt or stabbed or anything, except for one weak point that can be moved at will. It's awesome seeing him fight guys that keep trying to stab or punch every inch of his body trying to find the weak spot.
Champ Against Champ- A guy loses his leg in battle, so he gets a steel replacement leg and learns the "18 Deadly Kicks". The movie has a neat gimmick I've never seen in a kung fu flick before- sometimes when the main character hits someone, it switches to a point-of-view shot of the guy flying about 50 or 60 feet away from the camera. Coolness!
Of course, there's plenty others, like The 7 Deadly Venoms, Chinese Super Ninja, and many others, but I'll stop for now and let others talk about some of their favorite chop sockey movies.![]()

I'm a big horror fan too.Originally posted by Korian

Whoa now, Stormriders was made in 1997.
I like Kung Fu flicks-
Last Hurrah For Chivalry- Greatest title for a movie ever and one of John Woo's best. Incredible and unique swordfights and the other badass called Green are in it.
Croutching Tiger Hiden Dragon- Everyone knows this one.
Enter The Dragon- ditto
Iron Monkey- Got a release over here, classic Yeun Woo Ping.
Millionaires Express aka Shanghai Express- Classic Samo Hung with a gigantic cast.
The Magnificent Butcher- An older Samo Hung classic.
Eastern Condors- A mix of kung fu and covert military action thats a take on The Dirty Dozen, another badass Samo classic.
Zu: Warriors From the Magic Mountain- Tsui Hark's original fantasy swordplay movie, anytime you see superhuman and magical abilities that involve glowing swords and pretty visuals in a kung-fu film it probably was influenced by this movie.
The Stormriders- Mortal Kombat from HK, but with a nice story, a good example of a Zu influenced movie.
Fist of Legend- Yeun Woo Ping and Jet Lee in a remake of a Bruce Lee movie.
The Tai-Chi Master- Another Woo Ping/Jet Lee classic, with Michelle Yeoh too.
Then there are great movies like Mr Vampire and Shaolin Soccer, that while not totally kung-fu movies are alot like them in spirit.

I heard that Zu was supposed to come out in US theatres this year. Was that just a rumor, or is it a remake (or perhaps a similarly titled movie)?
God is Rome
Chinese Ghost Story I like...I'm more of a gun guy, generally.
Legend of Zu is a recent flik Tsui Hark made with Zang Zya (the CTHD girl) and some of the original cast (Samo Hung is in both, don't know if Yeun Baio is in the new one). I think it is actually a prequel, though I couldn't make much sense of the first movie so I don't really care about that. I've heard mixed things about the movie, so I haven't kept up too much with it. It was scheduled for release over here, and a friend said he seen a trailer for the movie early this year in theatres. I don't know if will be released here eventually or not, there is probably a regionless dvd out.
Dolemite, I haven't seen too many kungfu movies with corny style names. But I do have what I'm sure is a bootleg of Iron Monkey, and the translation is horrid. Still, you can't falt a translation where the main bad guy brags about his Invincible King Kong Palm!

Yeah, I think Green is right, Storm Riders was a recent movie. I mean, didn't it have CG in it? I've seen it, it was a damn cool movie.Originally posted by FighterX
Storm Riders - a Kung Fu flick about martial artists w/ elemental powers. Even though it was made back in the early 80's, it still looks better than 1/2 the films out today, and the special effects are excellent.

Damn, Dolemite, why dont you ever come to Movie boards? If you would, you would have seen all the threads and reviews I usually post related to Asian movies
Storm Riders was recent HK film (1998), and did had some excellently done CGI work. Its more of fantasy type of wuxia film though with fighters flying in the air and using magic attacks, then a regular old style kung fu flick. Still its very good.
Man Called Hero - is another recent HK production, that combines some very cool sfx work and HK kung fu action.
Green named many pretty cool movies on his list.
Legend of ZU was big HK summer movie of 2001, but it didnt do that well in HK theaters. In US, Miramax got a hold of the film, and pretty much fucked it up, as they do with most of their other Asian releases. It was supposed to come to US theaters this year, but since then is on hold. Same fate sadly awaiting new Jet Li's film Hero.
