Thread: Official Freddy Vs. Jason thread

  1. Ever since the next Friday the 13th sequel was announced there have been a lot of speculations and rumors as to what the film was actually going to be about. Yes, Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes company will be producing the film and, yes, that's terrifying news for fans, like myself, who absolutely hated their TCM remake. But Fangoria got the scoop straight from one of the producers about the plans for the sequel.....and it's not all good.

Friday the 13th Part 11 co-producer Brad Fuller had this to say to Fangoria.

“We don’t know exactly what it’s going to be yet; it’s definitely not going to be set after FREDDY VS. JASON or JASON X,” Fuller says, addressing their film’s place in the FRIDAY universe. “This was such a juicy title, we couldn’t pass it up. So we’ve been talking to screenwriter Mark Wheaton, and we’re figuring it out. Jason didn’t really start killing until FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2, so this isn’t a remake of the first one—Jason’s definitely going to be killing people in our movie. He didn’t wear the hockey mask until the third film, and our Jason is definitely going to wear the mask—so this is how we’re going about it right now.

“It feels to me like it’s going to be a re-imagining. I don’t know if there is a term for it…it’s going to be like what we did with THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, that’s the best analogy I have. There are going to be things you recognize, but we will make it a distinctively different story. We’re going to keep all of the things that are expected [of a FRIDAY THE 13TH film] in there.”

Like I said...bad news for those of us who hated the TCM remake. Fuller also said the film will NOT be released this Friday, October 13th as previously reported. Both because they don't want to rush it and it would be in direct competition with their TCM prequel.

I know continuity isn't a strength of the Friday the 13th films, especially after The Final Chapter, but it worked well in the first four films and in my opinion it sounds like they're going to fuck with it big time. Guess we'll have to wait and see. This should be an interesting few months as the project progresses.

Thanks for all the congrats and yeah, our shared exec is a bad-ass as are the fellas from Platinum Dunes (I remain a big "TCM" remake fan), so it should be a party. A party fueled by peanut M&M's, truckloads of Dr. Pepper and Rob Zombie albums, but a party nevertheless.

And since we need any hint we can get as to what the hell this movie is -

It would be a "remake" in a very loose sense of the word, but it would also try and act like cannon for the rest of the series.

Oh BTW, this won't be coming out this year. It's been pushed to early next year.

And I just have to add that I LOVE this guy's jason artwork.

  2. I have no idea what to make of all this. Personally, I liked the TCM remake, but then again, I was never really a fan of the original so the fact that there was "re-imagining" done for the remake didn't bother me. However, I'm not so keen on seeing Jason given that treatment. Still, we'll see what happens. I'm not too worried, given what a fan the writer is.

And yeah, the guy's Jason artwork is pretty cool.

Still, you have to wonder why New Line feels the need to come up with all these goofy concepts with all their movies (Jason is a demon worm, Jason goes to space and becomes Robocop, etc). Paramount's F13 movies were far more successful using the tried-but-true concepts.

Well, to clarify things, New Line really didn't have anything to do with the demon worm and Robocop Jasons. All they did was release them. Sean Cunningham's crew are the ones that came up with all that nonsense. To New Line, they were just (OMG industry term ahead) negative pickups. But with this new one it's completely under the control of New Line Cinema, just like F vs. J was. Cunningham and his crew's grubby mitts will be nowhere near this one, save for a "produced" and "characters created by" credits.

Granted, it IS New Line's fault for unleashing those concepts into the world.

  4. Well, that's good news then.

BTW, here's the Jason pic I submitted to the AICN contest. It's okay for a rush-job but usually I'm more detail-oriented. I would have liked to have added an actual background and more shading/folds/tears on Jason's outfit but whatever.

Don't ask me why I chose Peanuts. I just thought it was funny.

  7. Well, AICN posted the winner of the Jason art contest. Some of the runner-ups were really good (some far better than mine), but the winner was fucking horrible. It looks like it was sketched in under a minute and it contained the most clichéd geek subject matter ever (Monty Python, which is probably why it won).
