Thread: Prequel to Desperado?

  1. Prequel to Desperado?

I rented Desperado and El Mariachi, which are both made by the same guy. I haven't finished El Mariachi yet, but it seems like it could be the prequel to Desperado. I'm only about 20 min into the movie.

Yes, Robert Rodriguez made El Mariachi and for some reason it became famous. He then made Desparado, which is in the same vein as The Man With No Name trilogy (Good, Bad, Ugly/Fist Full of Dollars/Few Dollars More) where it features basically the same character, but the story isn't exactly related. Robert also did Dusk Till Dawn and Spy Kids. He's working on Spy Kids 2 and the next Mariachi movie called Once Upon A Time In Mexico with Antonio, Johnny Depp, and Willem Dafoe. If you notice, the hero in El Mariachi shows up in Desparado carrying the case with the machine guns.

  3. Well, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, been finished since early this year, and the company releasing just been sitting on its ass, and keeps postponing the US release. Hopefully it will finally come out Spring of 2003.

It has a great cast, interesting story, and hopefully cool action.

  4. I've kept up with OUTIM at AICN, three or so months back a guy watched a very rough cut of it, so I don't think its been done that long, if it is done at all. I think Rodriguez intends for Spy Kids 2 to come out first.

Hey Green, where've you been? Spy Kids 2 came out months ago.

OUTIM should be due for release sometime next year. I can't wait! Robert Rodriguez is like the Treasure of the movie industry, with his DIY skills and passion for filmmaking.

  6. I finished El Mariachi lst night and yes it is the prequel. No doubt about it.

    He also did The Faculty.

As a huge fan of El Mariachi and Desperado, I eagerly await Once Upon a Time in Mexico.

  8. And dont forget From Dusk Till Dawn.

As for El Mariachi, it was original film Rodriguez directed back in Mexico, almost without money for a budget, and even donating blood to get money to continue the shoot.

Later on, when Hollywood got interested in him, and he got some money to work with, he remade El Mariachi into Desperado.

    Pretty much.

El Mariachi isn't the prequel to Desparado.

It's pretty much just the result of having a budget and being able to remake El Mariachi to "Hollywood" standards...
