Thread: Movies you have seen lately

  1. Y Tu Mama Tambien = very good
http://www.famous-amos.com/images/wally.jpg Ooooh! I make a gooda cookie for you!!!!

  2. Bang-Rajan - Legend of Village Warriors - Historical Epic from Thailand, about Heroic fight of one village against the hordes of Burmese invaders. Very dramatic and stylish, and simular to Braveheart. Lots of great and very violent battle sequences.

Killer Tatoo - Thai Action film, with story of you young man who becomes killer for hire to find the criminal who killed his family. While trying to perform a hit on wealthy businessman, he meets to group of misfit killers(Thai Elvis Empersonator, Chong look alike sniper(haunted by spirit of his dead wife), and mental ex-military explosives expert). Together they need to find themselves in the middle of gang war between 2 rival gangs, and must fight both sides to survive. It was decent action film, some cool and stylish gun fights, in the tradion of HK cinema, and usual heroic attributes of Heroic Bloodshed genre.

The Frighteners - I really like this film. It was on Scifi channel last night, so we ended up watching it, since my wife never seen it before. Grim Reaper is very simular to the Wraith Jakson used in LOTR films TV version was edited though, and part where Jeffrey Combs, gets his head blown off, got replaced by scene of him being shot in the body and flying off the screen

Final Destination 2 - Great movie. Good and tense plot and awesome death scenes. Beginning car crash sequence is one of the most terrifying car crashes ever. See it today.

  3. The Gold Rush - Isn't quite as funny as Modern Times nor does it have the emotional punch of City Lights but it's still a great Chaplin film. (B+)

Umberto D - An old man's sad journey with his dog that ends in both slvation and despair. Vittorio De Sica breaks hearts with a sledgehammer. (A-)

Mon Oncle - Not as smart as the sequel (Playtime) and grows slightly repetitive, but rarely do I ever laugh out loud when watching alone and this made me do it several times.

Playtime - An overwhelmingly brilliant movie about how to find find solace, warmth, and celebration even in the most alienating of technology. And here I am spending all of my time just watching movies. (A+)

But now I'm getting a little tired of foreign movies and am looking forward to getting into the 'violence and emotion' cinema (Sam Peckinpah, Samuel Fuller, and super early Steven Spielberg).

  4. #134
The Nasty Girl - For a supposed comedy it isn't very funny. But it is a fairly good movie about a young woman's quest to uncover the truth about her hometown during Nazi Germany.

Seven Samurai - This is the first Kurosawa film I've seen. I found it too slow-paced for the first half but the characters and plot grew on me and it got really good later on.

Kangaroo Jack - Good for a few laughs. Nothing special.

Altered States - Interesting movie. I liked it although it's a bit too far-fetched.

  5. Rashomon.

An excellent Akira Kurosawa film. The movie starts as a man is running for shelter from the rain. He finds shelter under the crumbling Rashomon gates. Here he meets a woodcutter and a priest, who are talking about an event that recently happened. A woman was raped, and her husband was murdered, possibly by a bandit. The story is told through a series of flash backs, each by a different narrator. Each narrator (The women, the bandit, the woodcutter, and the murdered man, whose story is told through a medium) tells a slightly different story. The movie concludes with the priest helping the woodcutter piece together what really happened. Overall an excellent and innovative film, which I would rank beside other great Kurosawa films as Seven Samurai and Ran.

  6. Brotherhood 7 - Weird and extremely silly Thai action comedy. Set during Vietnam War, it follow the story of 7 ex-soldiers of Thai military, who devise the plan to steal a rumored treasure from US Military truck. But once they do, they find the truck is filled with Napalm barrels, and evil US Military team wants it back. Which lead to some of the sillies action scenes ever filmed, combined with ridicilously bad CGI FX.

24 Season 1 - I got the DVD boxset of the 1st Season, and so far watched first 5 episodes. Even though I know how it ended, it still very exciting and tense show. Some interesting plot twists, action scenes, and good actor performances.

Shanghai Knights - Decent Jackie Chan film, which does falls short of the 1st. It does have some great fight/stunts and most of comedy bits are funny. It just little too long, and some of the characters are unnecessary and annoying.

  7. Taxi Driver - Just finished watching it, and I think it's the best movie I've seen all year. I was glued to the screen the entire movie, which I can't say about many. I'll probably buy this one for the collection.

Lethal Weapon - Crap. Ridiculous, dumb, unfunny action flick. Wait a minute, the martial arts fighting at the end was funny. Oh yeah, and the parts where Mel was running through the streets looking like Rambo. I had the sequel set out, but I'm never watching it.

Thief - Another tape laying around that my parents had purchased. I saw Taxi Driver after, but I feel it has a kind of Taxi Driver vibe to it (not near as good, mind you), ending in a violent display.

Raging Bull - Forgot about this one in my last list. Semi-entertaining, but it ended with me feeling like it was pointless and depressing.

Three Fugitives - Crap. Two minutes of comedy (when Martin Short's character robs the bank) and the rest complete garbage (failed comedy, or whatever it was going for). Add to this a really cheesy 80s atmosphere and soundtrack. I don't know who the third fugitive was, either... what the hell.

Seven Samurai - Not spectacular, but an entertaining film nonetheless.

Ocean's 11 (new version) - I watched the classic version last month I believe, and I liked it, so I thought I might as well go for the updated version. I enjoyed it even more, and the whole plan was more enjoyable to watch and see unfold. I like the ending better, too. In the original, it's difficult to take when you've watched the elaborate plan go through.

  8. Well, Leathal Weapon is one of the better US made action films, and the sequel is pretty good. I assume you are not an action fan?

  9. Ghost World - a great movie, but its terribly overrated. I think I'd have enjoyed it more if people didn't hype it as much as they did. 7/10

Codename Phoenix - A really bodgy, low budget action flick. Enjoyable on a base level, but it sucks balls. 3/10

  10. Saw...

The Yards - This movie has Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron and some other big name stars in it, but I had never heard of it before. It's about a guy who gets out of prison, comes back home and almost immediately gets himself in another bad situation (with the authority). It doesn't seem very "memorable," but there's good acting and it's entertaining.

My Sweetearts Dance (something like that) - Damn horrible. A movie about two good ol' boys, one with a failing marriage, the other with a budding relationship. It's another Lifetime channel style movie, and the dialogue was atrocious ("Merry fucking Christmas" sticks out as particularly cringe-inducing, the second guy's girlfriend's bus analogy, and "dong" is a frequently used word... that says it all, really).

My Big Fat Greek Wedding - Not as good as I think it's getting credit for. I'm seeing this everywhere. But it definitely has some funny parts, I was just disappointed that they're mostly found in the first 20-30 minutes. Once it gets to the romance and wedding, it gets boring and scarcely comical.

Really!? That's a sad thing if that's the case. I would say I have liked a fair share of action movies, but I tend to stay away from them, favoring more story-centric films.
