Thread: Best Dreamcast VGA Cable?

  1. Best Dreamcast VGA Cable?

I'm planning to pick up a VGA cable for my Dreamcast (took me long enough).

I'm going through a couple of sites, and I see a lot of 3rd party boxes. Some seem shady, so which brands should I avoid and which one should I go out of my way to find?

  2. The one I've got is the Blaze VGA adapter. It definitely works well for 3D games, but sadly makes anything 2D almost unwatchable. The Mad Catz one is supposed to be the golden apple of the VGA adapters, even better than Sega's own model, but it's also damned hard to find (at least when I was in the market for one). The main reason is that the Mad Catz one has the pass through feature, which lets you switch between using the monitor for your PC and Dreamcast on the fly. The Naki adapter is supposed to be the best value if you can't get ahold of a Mad Catz box, it's very cheap and the most stylish, but is still sadly missing the pass through.
Buy Yakuza and Oblivion. Help yourself, help TNL.

Don't you mean Performance? I have the Performance VGA and it does exactly that.

  4. I have the naki vga box. I've never had any problems with it and it works fine. As andy mentioned above it doesn't have pass through, but I think it's the easiest to find and I got it for $12 at gamestop.

  5. I was using a Dragoncast box until I won a first-party VGA box off of eBay for under $25. A few days later, I saw another auction for a 1st party VGA box ending for about $36. If you can find a first-party box for around this price range, I'd just go ahead and do it, unless the pass-through feature is that important to you. I use a separate monitor for my DC than I do for my PC so the pass-through was not a concern for me.

The Dragoncast box was decent, but I do notice an improvement when using the 1st party box, especially for games like KOF 2000 and SFIII. I haven't heard much about the Mad Catz VGA box, but I have heard good things about the Blaze box in case you end up deciding to go third party.

    Ditto.

It's the Performance one people are looking for, not the Mad Catz one.

I really don't understand why none of the others have pass-through. It's like the most important thing IMO.

  7. I'm using the Blaze one because my monitor's sound can only be controlled through the VGA when I'm using it. Although I would buy up one with a pass through feature in a second.
