Thread: Best Halverson review quote ever

  1. Best Halverson review quote ever

While home for Xmas, I dug out some 1993-era mags... and it's funny how nostalgia isn't always what it used to be. Gamefan rocked my universe back then, but looking back isn't always pretty. (Rest assured though, 1993-era EGMs are plenty painful, as well). I stumbled across what might be the most laughable qoute Halverson ever wrote in the September 1993 issue of GF.. in his 69% review of Super Mario All-Stars for the SNES. Ahem.

"I'm sorry but the old Mario games just haven't stood the test of time. The music and sound FX are great, but the control is to lose (sic) and it's all too cuddly. I believe its (sic) time to retire Mario for a more nineties character."

Obviously, a more 'nineties character' would be Bubsy, who scored a respectable 80% from Dave on the same page. I'm not really slinging mud here, but it's funny stuff, and an important reminder that our memories of the brilliance of GF are sometimes best left shrouded in the fog of the past.

  3. Sadly, going back and reading GameFan/GameGo is almost painful. Their 'different' views generally haven't aged well =/
Buy Yakuza and Oblivion. Help yourself, help TNL.

I think a majority of the GF issues are still pretty decent, certain parts not withstanding... *points to first post*

  5. 80% of the Gamefan issues I have are still quite enjoyable to read. GameGo damn sure hasn't aged well though.

  6. Yeah, as much as Dave's opinions seem sometimes silly now, that same issue did feature NINE pages of import RPG coverage, which was 100% unbelievable to a RPG-starved 15-year old like me at the time.

  7. Yeah, GameGo has aged horribly. I went back and read that first issue, and damn if ECM just didn't ruin the whole book

  8. ECM's stuff was interesting, it was the endless JPN mech crap that killed it for me.

    yeah,things were quite different,slightly over a year ago. o_O

Anyways, GameGo was a single issue, I was happy enough with it just coming out.

That quote is crazy. I'd love to see what Halverson has to say about classic mario now. Haven't seen any issues of Play about though, on that one day I went to look for it.
