    Full Metal Jacket

Is there a widescreen edition of this film available on DVD?

If so, why the shit can't I find it anywhere?

  2. There is no widescreen version of this movie on dvd. They kept it full screen because that's the way the director originally envisioned it. There are 2 versions though. The only difference is that one is in dolby surround and the other is in 5.1.

Why would you want one? The only reason why widescreen exists is to preserve the director's/cinematographer's original vision for the film. Kubrick's original vision for the film WAS in fullscreen 1.33 :1 ratio. Thats what it was filmed and released as. Actually, Im pretty sure all his films were. The two I have here, Eyes Wide Shut and Dr. Strangelove, both are.

I guess a widescreen version could be made by chopping off the top and bottom instead of the right and left side. But wouldn't that be pointless?

OK. If it was released in theatres in fullscreen then nevermind.

The back of my DVD says "This film has been modified from its original aspect ratio, and formatted to fit your screen."

Thats the only reason I'm asking.

The two you listed were always fullscreen as you mentioned, but not all of his films were. I don't want to know what 2001 would look like in full screen

That is odd. Out of the 8 films in the collection, that is the only one that says that. I'm very suprised it was modified, because when it came to lenses and ratios, Kubrick was a particular guy. He often used incredibly old cameras, and the lense he used for Barry Lyndon was originally designed for NASA.

    It looks shitty.

But I'm sure you could figure that out on your own.

  8. It's funny, I was watching this movie the other day and wondering if it was originally filmed in a fullscreen aspect ratio. I mean, it didn't look like pan & scan, everything looked like it fitted onscreen with nothing cut off on the sides. Weird. But then Kubric was supposed to be a kook. Awesome movie, though. Gunnery Sargent Hartman rules. Too bad the man has become totally typecast by playing the same character type in tons of other films. He had some great insults in this movie:

"I am hard but I am fair! There is no racial bigotry here. I do not look down on niggers, kikes, wops or greasers. Here, you are all equally worthless."

Dolemite, the Bad-Ass King of all Pimps and Hustlers
Gymkata: I mean look at da lil playah woblin his way into our hearts in the sig awwwwwww

  9. Excellent film. One of few Kubrics films that I actually like.

  10. Someone should make a "Best Vietnam Movie" poll on this forum.
