Thread: Despair, what do you think of Enemy At The Gates?

  1. Despair, what do you think of Enemy At The Gates?

As a Russian, and all, is it a good telling of the tale of Vacilly Zeitsev (sp?)?

I know he killed close to 400 in 2 months, and that was downplayed, but accurate movie or no?

  2. Well, Its a well know war story. As the film, Enemy at the Gates was done nicely, with grand battle scenes, gritty ruins of Stalingrad, and true horrors of war. It was nicely directed, and camera work was exceptional. Action scenes, were exciting, and I always liked Sniper movies. Both Jude Law and Ed Harris were good in their respective parts. Sure they have to make people speak with stupid accents, even though they are speaking English. I could never understand that. Either make them speak normal English, and pretend they speak Russian, or make them speak actual Russian.

In all, I liked it, expect for a few parts. The russian boy working for Germans, is not something that would really happen, and his death was overplayed as big dramatic moment. I dont remember if love story did actually happen, but it also was present in Russian version of the same story called Angels of Death. I havent seen russian film, so I cant comment on that. Maybe I will try to rent it one of this days at local Russian store.

  3. Interesting.

Can you reccomend any good US movies on Russia or Russian movies then?

    Seems clear to me.

  6. Battleship Potemkin, while being from the 1920s, is one of the true triumphs of cinema. Its been ripped off so many times its not even funny, so it isnt quite as powerful as it was in the 1950s or so. But its an amazing film. And its Russian!

  7. Damn, what a coincidence.
I just rented this movie the other day, and I loved as much now as I did when I first saw it in the theatre. This is one of my favorite war movies I have ever seen.

  8. On a semi-related note, what about K-19: The Widowmaker? Also an American-made movie about Russian war themes with American actors in them. I thought it was amusing to see Harrison Ford trying out a Russian accent.

  9. Well, I havent seen K-19, but from what I read Kathryn Bigeloo did an excellent job with it, and cast portraited russian crew very nicely. Harrison Ford was very good as Russian Sub commander. Maybe I will rent it one of these days.

  10. DiffusionX is right - Battleship Potemkin is incredible, and you could probably watch it a couple of times just with the purpose in mind of noting all the scenes that have been ripped off by modern movies.

"Strike!" is another entertaining film, same guy (what's his name again?), despite all the communist crap.
