The negation would have resulting in a replay of the down, which would have resulted in Matt Bryant choking and missing wide left anyway .
hahah - well lemme say that the way the giants blew that lead makes me glad this all worked out in the 49ers favor - of course, being a 49ers fan also makes me say that.

also this is very true, from the posted linked article:

Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi called the refs' mistake a "bitter pill to swallow,'' but he said his team shouldn't have been in that position.

"The officials didn't blow a 24-point lead,'' he told ESPN. "The officials didn't mess up the field goal in the first place.''
    Enough said on that methinks.

  2. True, but that doesn't change the fact that the 49ers were handed a win they didn't yet earn. If the tables were turned, you wouldn't be saying "Oh, I guess that's that, then." The Niners may have dominated the last 20 minutes, but that doesn't negate that the Giants dominated the first 40 to put them in a position to win the game with time expiring. This wasn't some close judgment call - it was a complete lapse in both observation and familiarity with the rules.

The Giants collapsed, but they most certainly were still robbed.

  3. ah how quickly we forget the interception on behalf of the 49ers that was ruled an incomplete pass... remember that? it was on the giants final drive before the botched up FG attempt - where a San Fran defender intercepted a pass and had possetion but was brought down by the Giants reciever with a facemask (for which a penalty was at least called) that caused him to fumble the football only to have a fellow 49er recover it - game should've been over right then AND there.

The official closest to the play dropped the interception flag signaling 49ers recovered the turnover - but the other officials ran in claiming it was an incomplete pass... looking at the game again (i've got the last half of the 4th quarter on tape) i can tell you (and so did the announcers) that it was NOT an incomplete pass. The 49ers were shafted right then and there.

So this "blown" call by the officials on the botched FG attempt is pretty a fitting retribution - and like that Giants manager essentially said - the Giants themselves blew this game and weren't robbed for shit - they had all the chances in the world!

    from the article

"It was a cluttered ending to an exhausting game, but the 49ers didn't apologize Monday for their victory. After all, they're still convinced that Ahmed Plummer intercepted a pass by Kerry Collins two plays before the botched field goal.'

hah! That's hilarious. I have a new avatar for a while. Too bad it looks so crummy when I resize it.

And that wasn't an interception. He never had control.

  7. From CNNsi:

Meanwhile, New Jersey Assemblyman Anthony Impreveduto wants the league to allow the state to host a Super Bowl by 2006 and called on the head of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, which runs Giants Stadium, to begin legal action against the NFL.

"New Jersey taxpayers may have been cheated of tax revenue the state would have earned from players' income and other Giants-related enterprises had the team advanced in the playoffs," Impreveduto said in his letter to George Zoffinger, the sports authority president.

Zoffinger said he could not comment until he speaks with Impreveduto.
    That so rules.

  10. What the fuck is the point of punting when you're down by 25 in the third?

If you lose, it doesn't matter whether you lose by 3 or 30.
