Thread: Fighters - 2D vs. 3D

  1. Fighters - 2D vs. 3D

In general, which do you prefer?

    I'll take 2D over 3D any day.

EDIT: This was supposed to be a poll but I forgot to put that in, and now I can't change it. If a mod would fix this that'd be great.
Well that's like, your opinion, man.

  2. I'm with you. 2-D fighters are not only my favorite fighter genre, but my my favorite overall videogame genre. The Last Blades, The Street Fighters, and of course the Samurai Shodowns. My favorite games ever.

"I can vouch - there is nothing, and I mean NOTHING, like owning your own Neo Geo. To touch it, to look at it, to feel the kerchunk of a mammoth VHS sized cartridge plugging in. To turn it on and hear the "doodlydoo," and then sit or stand and play with those huge joysticks. To play on your TV or your monitor and just revel in the badass arcade feel of it."

  3. I'll take 2D over most 3D fighters. 2D fighters have had more time to be refined to near-perfection, whereas 3D fighters are still evolving. I'll go with the refined product any day of the week. The exception to this rule is the VF series.

  4. While many more 2D fighters are technically head and shoulders above most 3D fighters, with Virtua Fighter 4 there is now a single 3D fighter that no other 2D fighter is as good as, in the technical sense, at least imo. Other 3D fighters are certainly very good, like Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive 3 (oh shut up already), and Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, but none other than VF4 are quite as technically proficient as a game like Street Fighter 3: Third Strike.
Buy Yakuza and Oblivion. Help yourself, help TNL.

  5. I beat six CPU fighters in VF4 by simple button mashing. Take that as you will.

  6. I think I disagree with that (That VF4 has highest tech levels). I was just going through some classic SF2 threads at shinakuma.com and allot of people there sound like they brought SF2 to levels I didn't know possible. I think really high technical levels exist in a lot of great 2-D fighters, some would argue more then VF4. I'm no authority on either genre, but I wouldn't pick one over the other in terms of technical skill.

  7. Ugh...I'm not sure I even want to get into this one...

I'm just going to say 3D fighters, as if I were voting in a poll. I have a feeling any explanation I could provide would go on deaf ears with this 2D-centric board...

  8. I always thought VF4 had bad hit detection..maybe that is just me. Bah, I would take Guilty Gear over any 3D fighter any day.

Unfortunately, even we can't add polls... only edit them.

Back on topic. 2D fighters are superior in style, gameplay, challenge, competition, and any other way you can name except polygon count, and that is a good thing.
