We discussed Wolfe's various books/series in a thread from 6 months ago or so, remember? Anyway, I can safely second JM's nod to Gene Wolfe. Heady stuff.

Started Book 10 of WoT last night. Meandering plot line, here I come...

It seems like he may be overcompensating in WoT series; I don't think even women would find his female characters particularly likeable.
Besided the character Moiranne I have met no woman (well... my mom has read some of it... she quit when I let slip that Moiranne dies) who does like them.

I will check out the Books of The New Sun. Thx for the recommendation. I'm going to need something to tide me over till my new LOTR books arrive and the new G.R.R. Martin (ha!) book comes out. I don't like the name "A Song of Fire & Ice."

  3. ugh... i can't stand fantasy books...

Oh, I must add that the Terry Goodkind "Sword of Truth" books are some of the worst books I have ever read. I wish I had a dime for every time he uses the same damn metaphors OVER & OVER. You are bound to read the words "raptor's gaze" & "his cloak seemed to move with a life of its own" about 95 times per book. The plots are the equivalent of a bad action movie, one implausible coincidence after another.

Give me Tolkien or George R.R, Martin any day for regular fantasy.

Heh. I'm glad to see that someone thinks that way about Terry Goodkind besides me. I don't at all understand why so many people admire him.

George RR Martin= my favorite fantasy author of all time.

Books of the New Sun? What are the individual titles?

Oh, does anyone know anything about Robin Hobb? I'm thinking about picking up a couple of her books, but I'm not too sure about her.

    Orginally appearing in 4 volumes:

    1. Shadow of the Torturer
    2. Claw of the Concilliator
    3. Sword of the Lictor
    4. Citadel of the Autarch

These have since been combined into 2 volumes which can easily be found.

They were followed by the 5th volume coda:

    5. The Urth of the New Sun

The saga continued in the ultra-weird "Long Sun" series (another 4 books, I believe...it's been a while since I've read them).

OMG!!1 I'm exactly the same way, except for the fact that I can't stand it in movies or games.

I enjoy the Lord of the Rings books/movies though.
