    Dungeon Crawlers

Any good Dungeon Crawling games to Recommend?

I can't say I'm too big a fan of Random Dungeon Generators, I'd rather have well designed dungeons without having them different each time but that just me.

I recall one game, had a frustrating stipulation where once you exited the dungeon your level would drop back to 1.

How are the Torneko and Chocobo games?

  2. Diablo 2 is by far my fave.

Phantasy Star Online is also pretty sweet.

  3. Oh... actually, let me ask you... what is a dungeon crawler?

I always thought they were RPGs with barebones or no storyline, with randomly generated dungeons (ie emphasis on exploring the new layouts + fighting).

But Grandia Xtreme is often called that even though most of the game isn't randomly generated, and the only reason you have to replay the stages is cuz they jacked up the bosses difficulty so high you're forced to go back and level.

Then there's Tales of the World Narikiri Dungeon 2 from Namco which is also called a dungeon crawler. The dungeons are the same all the time, but they areas within them of differing difficulty. You'll take on tons of subquests from the townsfolk which will send you to varying dungeons and varying areas within the dungeons. Is this also a dungeon crawler?

    What is the definition? ?_?

Well for me the first thing that comes to mind are the random generated type with little story just exploration.

Or a game like EGG where most of your time is spent navigating rooms, and figuring out puzzles. Though Boss battles and story are more visible in these type.

  5. Diablo(with HellFire add on) and Diablo 2(with Lord of Destruction add on) are 2 of the best dungeon exploration styled rpgs. Randomly created levels, abundance of weapons, armors, items and monsters, and lots of exploration to be done.

Throne of Darkness is is Diblo clone, with Japanese theme, and group of 7 Samurai to control. I playing it now, and its pretty good.

Record of Lodoss War is DC game done in style of Diablo, and pretty decent.

  6. I haven't played much of anything in the Diablo style, but I'd say I enjoyed Evolution for the DC. Hopefully that counts as a dungeon crwaler.

  7. Dungeon Crawlers = the Kings Field and Evolution type games.

  8. The only one I'm drooling over playing at the moment is Wizardry 8 for PC. Just need to find a copy. The game is stellar. You can download a demo from sites like FilePlanet.

  9. baldur's gate: dark alliance is quite excellent to look at and a lot of fun as well, and now it's a GH on PS2 so no excuse not to pick it up. definitely up the top of the genre, although it's action based so if you're looking for something with turn-based battles look elsewhere.

and of course, PSO is a dungeon crawl and *so much more*! i won't go into it, assuming you've heard about it. =)

dreamcast has the evolution games (also on GC) and time stalkers, all of which are mediocre but entertaining if you simply like the genre. also all randomly-generated.

there's wizardry on the PS2, which is actually a well made game for the genre, somewhat interesting. i didn't find it compelling but if it's the kind of thing you go for then i have very little problem recommending it to you.

  10. Narikiri Dungeons, and Evoulution. EGG if you count that.
