X isn't a Metroid clone either. It's just Castlevania done really, really well.

III was definitely the most unique game in the series, I just don't think the gameplay matched up to IV's.

I vote for 4 as well, it would have been number one if I hadn't gotten a Duo and Dracula X a few years back. Awesome music and stages, and crazy effects (especially those rotating rooms). Dracula was a bit easy, but can't win 'em all. Plus, you have full directional control of Simon when jumping, which, off the top of my head, isn't in any other Castlevania game.

I chose Simon's Quest because I just love the rpg elements of upgrading your whip and visiting different towns and stuff. SC4 is awesome too though. Hell, they all kick ass.

Castlevania 3 is my favorite right behind Dracula-X.
Multiple paths and characters? Unheard of at the time (I think, correct me if I'm wrong.) An amazing game. I drool at the prospect of a Castlevania 3 Chronicles type remake.
