Thread: Best Castlevania?

  1. They re-did the soundtrack? I just thought they made the game harder. Bastards! Now I gotta track another game down...

the japanese release actually uses a special sound chip that was built specifically for the game. the us cart has no such chip, so they had to rearrange the music to compensate. to hear the difference, download the nsf files at zophar.net. the japanese version is absolutely wonderful. easily one of my favorite soundtracks of all time.

  3. Tough call, but I have to go with Castlevania 2: Simon's Curse just barely over Super Castlevania 4. I just absolutley loved the first mix of RPG-like exploration gameplay with traditional Castlevania gameplay. Still holds a special place in my heart
    omg TNL epics!

  4. EASILY, castlevania 2: simon's quest.
i mean, when the townsfolk tell you to give the boatman garlic, when what you really have to do is select the heart (or bone?), or when you have to kneel on a ledge so a tornado can come take you away to another world, that's good gameplay. no contest.

  5. Out of all of those I enjoyed Bloodlines the most.

I hope this is sarcasm. Seriously, how the fuck did ANYONE figure out what to do to finish this game? The clues weren't just vague, they were completely full of shit.
Actually, I do know how folks managed to finish the game, they called the Nintendo Power game counselors. :^)

  7. Bloodlines is pretty good, but its pretty ugly as well.
    Barf! Barf! Barf!

  8. Hands down, Super IV. How people can even mention Bloodlines in the same sentence is beyond me. I've never played X, but I'd personally put Super IV ahead of Symphony of the Night.

I never finished Simon's Quest, now I know why, heh. I must have dropped 82 cloves of garlic through that stupid guy's boat.

And I'm never sure why people bag on the FatBoy Castlevania Adventures. I only played the first two, but I loved them both - some of, if not the best graphics and music for the system, and really well designed levels and bosses. I never noticed the characters moving any slower than Simon did back on NES. Dude was practically paraplegic.

I must have finished Castlevania Adventure II 50 times - I used to go through it just to hear that awesome ending music.

  9. i like the game a lot, and i admire konami for trying something different, but castlevania 2 has some serious problems. remember the dozens of invisible pits? they're all over the place, and there's really no way to tell without constantly throwing holy water in front of you. then there are the lying villagers and the completely nonsensical puzzles.

that said, i would love to see a next gen castlevania that uses some castlevania 2 concepts. specifically, town to town travel, the day/night cycle, and multiple dungeons/castles.

I really like the Metroid-type games so I would probably pick one of those.

For the traditional Castlevanias, Castlevania IV is definitely the best non-Dracula X game. I love the freedom of the whip movement.

Bloodlines was a complete disappointment. The graphics sucked and the gameplay was a step back to the 8-bit games. At least Konami didn't screw up Contra on Genesis.
