Best Castlevania?

I've been playing the ex86000 version recently (I think that's the version on Chronicles, but I'm not 100% positive) and am really enjoying it. Much more then I did the numerous times I tried to like IV, and more then what I remember of I & II. Don't think I've ever played III and never played X.

I'd still put Symphony and COTM above that one. Probably HoD as well.

I don't think it's ALL that great (even if Evergreen is one of the best Dracula songs composed to date), but whatever. I also found the PCE Dracula X Rondo Soundtrack to be rather underwhelming... I'm glad I didn't pay $90+ for an original pressing.

Hey, has anyone here actually beaten Castlevania Chronicle's original mode? I remember being savagly raped by the Werewolf boss, and just giving up. Maybe someday I'll try again.
