I voted Sonic 1, I have Sonic cd but havent played it in a LONG while...
To me Sonic cd's level layout was convoluted at best...
Sonic 1 imo had the best flow of all the games...
Sonic CD. My lord I've found common ground with Yoshi. What's next? Yoshi voteing democratic and me wanting the Raiders to win the superbowl?
Make it stop!

I guess it's different territorry, but I thought sonic spinball was a pretty cool game
Sonic 2, only because I have so many fond memories of it, like how I was blown away when I first saw the half pipe bonus levels, etc.
Also, I think Sonic CD gets way more credit than it deserves. The sonic games have never really been about solid and cohesive level design, but come on, Sonic CD's levels are so haphazardly designed, it was as they were randomly put together.
That opening cinema scene was cool as hell though.
Shakey, I also enjoyed Sonic Spinball. I don't get why folks hate it so much, it's not the best Sonic out there, but it's far from the worst.

Sonic the Hedgehog (one) is classic for a reason.
Because it was the first to come out therefore people have alot more nostalgia when they think back to playing it?
I dunno, man. They all have their ups. I have Sonic CD (PC, US, and Jap) and I still come back to all the first 3.Originally posted by Yoshi
Anyone who votes for anything but Sonic CD has never played the best platformer ever.
I can really see the case for Sonic 1, 2, 3, or CD. They all have their advantages. 1 and 2 definately had the best music. Much as I love Bo, DCT defined the sonic sound. I like the music better than CD's as well. Sonic 2 had the most speed-oriented level design, but Sonic 1 had the best visual style. The level design and special stages in 1 had alot going for them too. Then Sonic 3 just had amazingly huge and diverse levels that really lent themseves to exploration. I don't think there's a clear cut best in every way, they were all different, and my preference fluctuates constantly.
Not the case for me at all, I personally like the level layouts and flow of the game better then the others..Originally posted by Kidnemo

And as mentioned, although I liked Sonic cd it was as if the levels were just randomly pasted together..
I love Mario 1 but Mario 3 to me is by far the better of the first 3 games..
Not nostalgia at all....
Favorite would be #1, followed by Sonic & Knuckles, followed by 2, followed by 3... then Sonic CD.
Just replayed Sonic 1 the other night and it impressed me all over again. As someone already said, it has more straightforward (or "tight") level design. I get tired of the labyrinthine levels of Sonic CD and to a lesser extent, Sonic 2. Sonic 2 I have great memories of, but it seems too long in comparison to Sonic 1, and the level design isn't as enjoyable overall (a lot of the springs/loops seem to be set up to purposefully launch you into spikes, enemies, pits, etc.). Sonic 3 is one I seemingly skipped over and Sonic & Knuckles had some great straightforward platform levels like #1, just a lot longer (Sandopolis) and better graphics (Mushroom Hill never ceases to impress, especially the "switch" midway through a loop roll).
