Thread: Batman: The Animated Series

  1. I think this is my favorite cartoon series of all time, if not my favorite show. For christmas, my friend got me the Batman: Animated Series DVD with the first 5 episodes aired on Fox, or something like that. I really hope they release the entire series as a collectors set. There are some episodes I haven't seen in a long time.

I enjoyed the WB series just as much, one of my favorites was the episode where Clayface returned, hunting Tim's "gf". It was a sad ending and I'm glad they took that route...

  2. I always liked the Tyger Tyger episode, mainly because they based it around Blakes poem. The one episode with the touch of death was hella cool too, forgot its name though. Ok, i think its time to search out some Animated Series DVD's now...

I don't know why people like that episode that much. Bringing back Clayface just killed it for me... being that "Mudslide" happens to be one of my favorite episodes. It just worked as an anti-climax for me.

I always enjoyed the side story episodes. "A Bullet for Bullock" and "Showdown" I found to be quite entertaining, even if it had little to do with the Bat. That "Over the Edge" episode was pretty good, too. I caught the episode right when Gordon's daughter was pushed over. For the rest of the episode, I was like... WTF?? When I found out it was a dream... I couldn't help but
It was still good for what it was worth.

  4. I always really liked the "I killed Batman" episode where everyone thinks this guy Sid the squid killed Batman.

Clayface was one of my favorite villains, so that and the fact that the story was tragic gave it a special place in my memory...

Anyone remember the episode with Poison Ivy, Killer Croc, Penguin, and Two-Face playing poker with everyone telling their story about who got the closest to killing Batman?

What about the one where Batman is put on trial by the madmen (and women) in Arkham with the female attorney trying to represent him (and the Joker as the judge). I haven't seen these episodes in awhile...

  6. I love this series (Harley Quinn owns your ass). It's the best American cartoon ever. I wasn't crazy when they tinkered with the character designs and made them more 'cartoony', though.

  7. Just a few of my own comments...

The fun thing about the Grey Ghost episode was the fact that the Grey Ghost was voiced by Adam West. Perfect casting, if you ask me...

The reason Robin started showing up so much was because the clueless Fox execs demanded Robin be in every episode. (Hence, the second season being called "The Adventures of Batman & Robin" or some such.) It got to the point where when the producers and directors wanted to do an episode that primarily revolved around Catwoman, with very little Batman and no Robin, the Fox execs asked where Robin was. When the producers asked if they could just do one without Robin, the execs canned the entire episode.

The Gotham Knights rebirth really bothered me. Tim Drake was really Tim Drake in name only; for all intents and purposes he was Jason Todd of the comics. The redesigned Joker looked kinda silly, and I much preferred the Animated Series Penguin. The only episode I really cared for was the Legends of the Dark Knight episode... and even that's mainly for the re-telling of the scene from "Dark Knight Returns" where Batman takes on the Mutants.

I'm also kind of curious how many of you had the same "WTF?!" reaction as I did when you found out Mark Hamill voiced the Joker. He wasn't even the producers' original choice; they tried Tim Curry in the role, but Curry wasn't maniacal enough for them. Hamill had just done a minor voiceover for the first Freeze episode, and asked if he could read for it. The producers were thinking, "Luke Skywalker as the Joker?" but decided to give him a shot. After Hamill read for it, they hired him on the spot.

Finally, on the subject of the Joker, my favorite episode has to be "The Laughing Fish", which is actually a combination of two comic book stories from the mid-70's: "The Laughing Fish" and "The Joker's Five-Way Revenge". The scene with the shark tank came from the latter. (Actually, "The Joker's Five Way Revenge" was the story that changed the Joker from being the camp character of the 60's to the homicidal maniac we know today.)

I'll probably think of more observations as time goes on...

And to think... Harley Quinn and Mercy (sp? She was Luthor's bodyguard) became so popular that they actually became part of the DC Comics canon. Though, it was kind of concerting when Harley kinda appeared out of nowhere in the middle of the whole No Man's Land Batman storyline where Gotham was cut off from the outside world...

  8. Yeah, they made up Harley Quinn just for this show didn't they? Again, one of the best shows of all time. I was also disappointed at the character redesigns but the storyline wasn't too bad (though wasn't as original either as the FOX version).

Killer Croc: "Yeah?! Well I threw a rock at im!"

    Everyone in the room:".................."

I liked all the episodes you guys mentioned, I also liked both Mr Freeze stories, the first with his origin and the second when he went down with his wife in stasis to depth of the sea. Also the Ras Al Ghul episodes were awesome, Batman all going Solid Snake and all in the desert.

  10. Robin's Reckoning Part 1 and 2 are the best episodes for me. Does anyone know if The Joker killed Batman's (bruce Wayne) parents?
