Thread: Dragon Warrior 7 - Is it worth it?

  1. Dragon Warrior 7 - Is it worth it?

I enjoyed the original Dragon Warrior games on the NES. Is the recently released Dragon Warrior 7 worth the money and time investment?

    Any thoughts...

  2. Opinions vary widely.

Mine is that the game is too much of an unrewarding time sink to be worth messing with. I got about 25 hours in and it felt like it was barely started.

Then again, if you're one who equates raw playtime with value for your money, you'll find no better game.

  3. It's old school. If that's your kink DW7 is sure to plaeas.

  4. Please hear me when I say this; DO NOT WASTE YOUR LIFE!!!
    Boo, Hiss.

  5. While the localization is REALLY rough around the edges and the game doesn't really pick up until about 30 hours in.. it is ultimately worth the 90+hour investment for serious RPGers, IMO.

Dragon Quest 7 plays exactly how a Dragon Quest title should play, at least in my perspective of the series. The sense of exploration and discovery is thoroughly tangible, the battle system is efficent and allows for you to use all of the skills you spent the time to learn at any moment, the music is great, and the story behind the entire game is profuse, which I think matters above all else (in terms of story).

People will tell you the story sucks, the graphics suck, the music sucks, the characterization sucks, the art sucks, the lack of voices suck, the CG sucks, the menu system sucks, among other things. For you to say that you played and enjoyed the original title makes me think you can look past the flaws it has and enjoy the actual good game that DQ7 is, but one never knows.

While the subject is here, I will say... and I do say this not in terms of meaning that the difference of versions make the US version lack text that is SEVERELY IMPORTANT TO GAMEPLAY or that the Japanese text somehow magically makes the game 10x better, but Dragon Quest 7 suffered in its translation to English.

All I know is that I didn't mind playing it for the 350+ hours that I have logged on file.

ps: Invisible frame-holders be damned, this game does look better with the PS2 system texture smoothing. Even if it does make the game crash sometimes.

  7. Dragon Warrior 7 is horrible. A thoroughly outdated, ugly, unfun waste of time. If this is how "old-school" RPGs used to play, Im glad we're out of that phase. Its just that I dont remember them being this shitty.

    Avoid like the clap.

  8. i say get it. i haven't finished my copy yet but i will someday. the class change system in this game rocks. the game is truly an epic.

Yes... if you happen to be a fan of the series. All others need not apply. They won't "get it". In other words, I think nostaliga plays a large role in the enjoyment of the DW games.

Good, you're all set then. Just realize that 1) the overall feel to the more recent games hasn't changed much since 1989 and 2) PS1 3D is ugly, there's no denying it. Definitely check out DW7, and also the GBC remakes while you're at it.

Oh, and unless you want to coast through DW7, don't learn the "SwordDanc" skill (4 attacks at 75% ATK power, MP cost - zero). It takes pretty much all the challenge out of battles, espeically boss fights.

Holy... fuck... You must've done EVERYTHING. Characters at level 99, all classes (human and monster) mastered, monster park completed, acquired all 5 Immigrant towns, millions of gold in the bank... Yeah, that would probably take 350 hours.

    Everything?

    Not even close.

My people are about at 60 each, only one has any sort of Monster jobs mastered besides Slime (and not all of 'em yet), the monster park is and forever will be long unfinsihed (since I won't be able to get to the 2nd Bonus dungeon and since I really don't give a flying fuck about finding 100 Small Fucking Medals), I haven't completed any immigrant final forms yet (probably for the same reason), I only have 1 mil in the bank... and I am at this point and that's 350 hours there.
